Hoping to get out on pool 14 this evening for a couple of hours. Anyone been out? Has the walleye bite picked up yet? I will post my results later tonight.
Thanks

How’d ya do? I’ve not been out in a couple weeks. Maybe this coming weekend I’ll get out and post a report.
I was not able to figure them out. I landed only three fish. 15″ walleye, 14″ sauger, and a 3lb flathead. The three fish that I did land were caught pitching ringworms in 8-10 ft of water. I tried vertical jigging ringworms and superdoo’s around wingdams and sand points with a few short strikes only. Also threw some cranks around the front of a couple of usually productive wingdams with no success. There is a ton of grass flowing making it difficult to fish everywhere that I tried. I assume other fisherman were having similar results as most every other boat was off of the water by 6:00. I’m afraid the fishing will only get more difficult when the river jumps up later this week. What do you think John?
The rising water can make it tough, but can also concentrate the fish off the main current along breaks and eddies. The grass, on the other hand, is a real fun buster when it is flowing thick!
Hey John, The grass was getting BAD up north from you last weekend with all the rain. I do not think it will clear up soon. Going to the IL river this weekend to fish the Govs cup. I hear the river is in good shape so the bite will be awsome this weekend. Those pig saugers should start going now with the cooler temps.
I made it out Wedensday for several hours, and the grass has gotten worse. No possible way to troll, even 3 way stick baits where fowling in less than a minute.
I managed four shorts and one 18″ eye in 7 hours. Several channel cats, flatheads, sheepies and white bass kept things interesting though.
The fish I did find where scattered yet. No real concentration of fish in an eddy or break. That should change soon as the water is really ripping. Most of my fish came on 1/8 to 1/4 oz. H2O jigs with ring worms casted up stream in shallow eddies, and drifted back through. The 18″ came on a chart/pepper SuperDo dead sticked tight along rip rap.
Water temp was 58-60 degrees, so things should really start heating up soon, if you can keep the grass off long enough to reach the fish.
John, good luck this weekend! Let me know how it goes. I think I will finally make it to the Illinois this fall for some of those huge saugers of yours!
You boys down south better get ready because the water is way-way up in Elk river and its coming your way, I haven’t seen the water up in the fall like this in a while, its been up for two weeks and its still not coming down yet. I will be in Dubuque next weekend for a wedding but I don’t think I will get out on the river. Good luck this fall.
