Alma on Friday

We got on the water at Alma (below the dam) about 8, not exactly the crack of dawn but my fishing partner wanted to fish traditional jig and minnow so we did. The action was intense to say the least, from the first line in the water, however size was the inverse of that. We guesstimated over 100 walleyes and sauger for 2 scoops of minnows, and of those only about 6 were 17-18 inchers, the vast majority at 13-14 inches. We were the 3rd boat at the dam when we got there and were joined by about 30 boats by 10am. Drifting from the dam downstream was the best technique although I watched a guy trolling cranks in and among the boats drifting and on occasion he hauled in a fish. I am surprised nobody took their anchor rope and threw a lassoo at him. He wasn’t exactly making friends with the drifting boats. The weather was great, and if it was traditional jig fishing you are after, the fish are in a feeding frenzy over at Alma.

    Lundgeye,

Thanks for the report. Alma has been pretty hot this fall. Some nice fish have been boated this fall and they all haven’t been small. Early morning and later afternoon have been showing some real piggies. I will have a new report up some time tomorrow night. You weren’t that guy with the Minnesota Viking motor cover that I talked to were you? Glad to see you in Alma.

No, that wasn’t me with the motor cover. Alma is a good place to fish, and had my fishing partner been a little more flexible with technique I believe we could have found some bigger fish. The action was great, though..and I’d do it again in a second. Forgot to mention in the original post, for us 1/4oz gold jigs were the best last Friday.
