There could be a couple of problems. One thing is that your lure may have come in contact with weeds and still has weeds or debris on it. When weeds get on it, it will push your lure up to top because the bill of the lure is not diving anymore. The other problem could be is that the lure is not running straight. I bought a whole bunch of lures from a certain manufacturer and every one of the red ones came right to the top. If the bill is not maufactured right can push it away from the boat also. Heat from the sun is one way that can screw up lures also. IF you leave your crankbaits in the sun it will cause the bill to weaken and move out of line. You can fix these but usually means lots of time. I usually just take them right back to the store. I hope that helps.

Sometimes the treble hooks will get caught on the line too and that will cause the lure to come to the top of the water. At least by coming to the top you know something is wrong and can fix the problem. Otherwise you would just be dragging a fouled lure around and not catch anything. Bill

It sounds like your bait is definitly out of tune. Try running the bait along your boat at the speed you will be trolling. Then what ever side the bait is running off to, bend the eyelet of the crank the opposite direction just a bit until it will dive straight down or run in a straight line.

This will tune most baits but some are just beyond help!
