I want to camp on the river next week. Can you camp anywhere you want? I might be camping in a no hunting area. Thanks Bill

I had a friend get a summons a couple of years ago for camping in the wrong location in the fall. I “think” that during duck/goose season, you can camp but have to be visible from the channel. You can not camp in the back waters not visible from the channel. He got the summons from Federal Game Wardens so I would check with them on the camping laws on the river.

I had to head up to Rochester yesterday (thursday) and I saw some people camping on the main cannel island on pool 9. Looked like a lot of fun . Was that you bigpike ? If so how was the fishing ? Did you have much company ?

What about those people that “camp out” on the opening weekend of duck season. Some of those people camp right next to their blinds. I have seen that quite often. Not to mention the people I know personally that do it. In what context does one define camping?

i think when they say camping,, is when u pitch a tent,, not to sure on this one,,i dont know if u can have a fire or not either,,, we stayed in the bottoms over night and some local people harrased us about it,,alls we did was sat there and grilled,, so who knows,, i jsut got done reading the waterfowl book and it didnt say a work about camping,,,

Here is the refuge district manager’s office phone # in McGregor. 563-873-3423
They should be able to set you straight on the camping rules on the refuge during the duck season.

You may want to check with a “higher up” person than me, BUT I think I remember reading the wildlife refuge sign with the rules and regs about hunting and camping, on the dike road between wabash and nelson on pool 4. I am pretty sure camping is permitted anywhere on the refuge. There were limitations to fires…either none or they had to be enclosed with a “ring” and you couldn’t bring any glass bottles and so on. So I know you can camp in them, just not sure of the specifics. If you’re around that area, just swing into one of the 3 landings on the dike road. All the camping rules are posted there. Hope this helps some and doesn’t confuse you more!!!! Let us know what you find out. Thanks.

I saw Steve post about camping, before I saw his post I was going to suggest that you camp at his resort at Everets. close to fish and he can help put you on some fish too. Jack.

Well I talked to two guys from the national refuge and they both told me I can camp were I want to camp, also you can saw your own fire wood as long as you saw DOWNED trees, the upright dead ones are used by wood ducks! You cannot leave your campsite for more than 24hrs or leave yout boat unatended for more than either 24 or 48 hrs(i wouldnt leave mine for more than 5 miutes) any ways thanks for all the input, you can camp pretty much wherever you want on this beautiful waterway! This could be alot of fun!
