What a great fall day on Saturday. The fall bite is definitely falling into place especially with the cold weather that has moved in this week. From talking to other fisherman, it seems that most of them are finding fish in some quantity or another. As DeeZee is finding fish on the wing dams I decided to work the trolling bite and cover some new areas of the river. My reward was finding a 26″ fish along with a number of smaller fish. I found the sand flats along with the sand to rock transitions to be the best producer when worked on the outside curve of the river. I trolled a number of crank baits using fire line and lead core with the largest fish showing up on lead core and #5 shad raps in 6′ if water. This time of year is prime time for so methods of fishing… my best advice is to get out there and work it.
    Good Luck, Zim

I was out on Sat. evening and didn’t get a thing, I didn’t understand it. I casted wingdams and trolled the shorelines but nothing. Any suggestions?

    Matt,

As far as the wingdams go, I have been positioning the boat well out in front of the wingdam and throwing back onto it or off to the side and letting the current sweep my lure into the face of the wingdam. I have been jumping from spot to spot quite a bit lately to find a a couple here and a couple there. Eventually you will land on a spot that is producing some fish and stay on them until they are done chewing. I have found that most of the time if you put one in the boat, get back to that general area as quickly as you can and take advantage of the activity. No tricks at all. As you gain confidence in a spot you tend to fish it a little differently than you would a brand new spot.

FYI….the water has risen quite a bit since Sunday and the wingdam bite completely went south for me yesterday. There is alot of current being pushed over the wingdams and I think the fish have relocated themselves on the wingdam to a more suitable position, but I did not make contact with one fish on the wingdams yesterday. We went in search for fish, and finally 3 hours later, I pulled in some backwaters and we immediatley put some big fish in the boat. The first fish was a VERY FAT 26 inch fish that was real close to 8 lbs. This fish was choking up 4″ shad religiously! We proceeded to catch a couple more fish a little smaller in the 22-24 inch range……what were we doing? Ringworms on light jigs in the sand. Cast up on the sand breaks and slowly work them on down the break and hang on because the hits are very intense!!

Hey Dee Zee. How bout some info on the back waters. Im just learning about the wing dams down there and now I need to go into the back waters. Is the back water to the north of the 694 bridge on the east side worth checking out. If so what is the channels and water depth like in there? At least in the back waters I wont have to worry about being swamped by any big boats. I hope.
Fishing has been great on the wing dams the last three weeks I have been down there. The info you guys post on here has been a great help to a nubie on that strech of river also. Thanks

    Mike,

Glad you like the site and glad to see you putting the info to good use! Pool 2 has alot of backwater areas up and down the river that walleyes utilize when the time is right. Remember, food is the main objective on the minds of these walleyes right now. A good backwater area can be as simple as a boat marina or as complex as a entire (backwater) lake. Wherever you find good concentrations of bait right now, it should be a solid clue that the walleyes are not be far behind.
The area north of 494 that you are referring to is considered the Pigs Eye lake area. This is one of many areas worthy of putting both walleyes and crappies to the boat.

Good Luck and I hope this helps
