Pool 16/17 Summer Walleye?

I have been fishing the river around Muscatine for walleye for almost five years, and I still haven’t figured out their summer patterns. I catch a lot of walleye and sauger in the spring and fall below Lock and Dam 16, so I know they are in there in the summer…somehere…biting on something…

Problem is, I have not figured out how to catch them consistently down here in the summer months. I have twenty-plus years’ experience catching walleye on Pools 5a through 8 in the summer, and I can pound them up there consistently this time of year. When I try the tactics (wingdams with crawler harnesses, leeches, willow cats, crankbaits, floating plugs on three-way rigs) that work up around Lacrosse and Winona in Muscatine, I get all the sheepshead, channel cat, mudcat, etc. I could want, but not many walleye or sauger. Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

    Hey VikeFan,

You say that you’ve been working the wingdams, but what about the clam beds and channel edges? The last time I was out on 17 I was pulling stick baits on a three-way along the channel edge and managed to get a limit in 2 hours.

I was out Saturday on 16 with my better half and we did well trolling cranks on the flats. Next time you get out this way give me a ring and I’ll try to help you out. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks for the tips. I am heading to Muscatine this afternoon, and will try some different things out. I do know of one clam bed in the area that holds fish during the spring and fall.

So how do you find a clam bed?

John, I have my boat down here now, we might have to split a trip some day. Let me know what your schedule looks like.

If you like sheepshead, go fish crawlers or crankbaits on Pool 17 right now. I must have caught twenty-five of them today. No walleye, but I did pick up a sauger off a clam bed. A couple of eater channel cats showed up on my rigs, too. Channel edges produced sheepshead, as did the front of the wing dams and the clam bed. I was fishing the upper end of the pool, but with fairly low and falling water levels I might have been better off on the lower end of a pool–that is the rule of thumb I have found.

I saw a few fishfly/lakefly/Mayfly-type bugs floating around–was there a hatch of them, or maybe one just starting? I got into a HUGE lakefly hatch up on Pepin this time last year.

    Dave,
I have to work the rest of this week–I am supposed to be going to three-day weeks after Sunday, but I don’t know the details.
