Pool 2 – Still Going.

Got a chance to hit the water for a few hours last evening on pool 2. The “mixed bag” bite off the wing dams and shoreline current breaks continues to be pretty good. These spots are consistently holding walleye, sauger, white bass, small mouth bass, sheepshead, and channel cats. All of these fish are aggressively hitting a #5 shad rap casting from and anchored position.

The approach I took yesterday was to run the shoreline slowly looking for any change in current along the shore. Anything that kicked the water back out to the channel. Rock/Wood/Barge… anything. Toss the anchor and start casting. Nearly every spot held fish. Don’t overlook even the real small breaks.

The last 3 trips out I’m finding a heck of a lot of young walleye. Beautiful fish in the 7-9 inch range and out numbering the sauger 10-1. The future is looking real good for pool 2. Anyone else seeing this trend?

yes…lots of small eyes. Many hitting baits that are nearly their own size. Aggressive little buggers!

I caught probably 20+ walleyes in the 8-12″ range a couple of weeks ago. They were all very healthy and aggressive!! This can only mean great fishing for the next few years!

Yes, been catchin’ lots of those 7-12″ walleyes. I pretty sure those were all those little bait thieves that were stacked up at the airport last winter. The future looks very good.

Was at Watergate Marina just outside, downriver and caught 5 eyes from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 lbs lst week Wednesday. Then went up to the culvert just above the no wake zone and caught 4 more. All on a spinnerbait, white with gold blades, tandem willow, in 2ft and less of water. Was very dissapointed. Was looking for smallies. Not a one. All them yellow and white fish in the way.

    mnfish,

I have been fishin for ol’ white tips and catching red eyes! We should trade spots!

I’m just super happy seeing and hearing reports of all the young eyes in pool 2. Can’t wait till they all grow up.

Same reports here with the little eyes. Its been awhile since I have seen this many numbers of little fish. Encouraging to see!
I did manage a couple trips to Pool 2 over the weekend and managed a 25″ fish each day with a small handful of fish in the 19-21″ range. Otherwise the majority of the fish were real small.

All of my bigger fish came off big plastics. 5″ and 6″ Kalin grubs on a variety of sizes of jigheads. When I pitched the shorelines, I downsize my jighead to a 1/16th or a 1/8 oz to have a nice slow drop. These areas I have been fishing the 1-4ft ranges. When I have been on the wingdams, I have bulked up to 3/8-1/2oz heads to cut through the current to fish the front deep side of the wingie.

Water temps were 68 degrees this past weekend.
