After reading DeeZee’s latest report (See report dated 8/10 in the fishing report forum) I made it a point to get down there ASAP. The trip was well worth the time and effort. Having not been on that stretch of river since early spring, I was feeling like a fish out of water! So I simply followed Steve’s advise and work “a slow rolling crank continuously bumping the rocks”. The areas we focused on were wing dams within 2 miles of the 494 launch. There are a lot of them in this section of the river, both upstream and down from 494. Take your pick! In a little over 3 hours of fishing we had 6-7 quality fish in the boat, with the biggest taping out at 25 inches! Toss in some really pissed off white bass and WOW, what fun! The best depth was 3-5 feet near the base of the wing dams. But read DeeZee’s report closely and pay attention to crank bait style and color. There is a good bite going on right now!

    Jon,

Glad you guys had a good time down there last night, we will hook up sometime soon and share a ride together.

Here is a pic of a nice looking creature that made its way to the boat off a pitched crank to a wingie!

I’ve been out on pool2 a three times since last friday and fishing has been good. Right now on the upper end of the pool (Mn. river confluence on up) 14″-18″walleyes are easy pickens. Just work the current breaks until you find the fish. And where there is one there is fiftey. Also caught two nice small mouths in these same areas pitching hair jigs shallow.
I was out later last night trying to figure out the wingdams a little better, fished awile without much luck. But I got into an area where the baitfish were getting pushed out of the water up against the shoreline and the whites were thick there. I just through them a smaller rattle trap and they hammered ’em, lots of fun on pool2 right now.

Your right MONGO….We were out Saturday evening and just hammered the Eyes. Just fish the quieter waters and breaks and they will be there. I’m going out this weekend and giving the wing dams a try. It will be my first attempt at the wingies and should be an adventure for me.

Spent last night south of 494 pitching wingies again.
The action was considerably slower than Monday night. Lots of sheepies and whites. Caught 6 eyes with 5 being nice saugers. Sets hooks into one nice eye that got close to inside the boat and being that I did not bring the net along, I tried some wrestling moves to get him into the boat with a mouth full of hooks and a angry attitude……needless to say she won. Fish was just about the 28″ mark. Would of been picture material Next time!

The water levels have been dropping at a steady pace. Those who choose to run over the wingies right now because of the high water, be careful. The river is ever changing piece!

Anyone looking for some fast action, check out the dam area and all its current breaks. Cranks and jigs are a good safe bet to put numbers of 16-19″ fish in the boat. This is a perfect opportunity to take a youngster out for a day of fun. The fish are very aggressive and you do not have to be very precise with your offerings, which is perfect for guys like me!

    Good luck and have fun

Was out on Tuesday on pool 2 as well. Fished early a.m. and had great success. Anywhere along the rock shorelines where the current is fairly slow is a bonanza. If you troll where the water’s moving rather quickly you’ll not have much luck. Pool 2 rocks!
