My dad has been fishing fireline for the last two years & says that it’s harder to tie, kinda hard to see, & is afraid that it may be cutting grooves in the eyes & bails. He’s in the process of going back to the trilene xt solar line and wonders if the line will start breaking easier now since switching. He also realizes that the solar line is being discontinued but also has lots of new line on hand. Any Idea’s? { John }

I haven’t noticed any problems yet and have been using fireline for several years as one of my trolling lines. Would be interested in hearing if anyone has had problems as I just ordered some new St. Croix Rods and don’t want to have any problems with them if people are having problems with damage from superlines. Thanks, Bill

I have fireline on my St Croix Avids for throwing cranks and have had no problems what so ever. You will be fine. St Croix makes a great product and if a rod should show wear and tear from such a thing, I am absolutely positive they would take care of you and the rod.
No worries mate!
August 9, 2002 at 2:20 am #245145For those that are not for sure that your eyes are getting cut there is a way to check to see if they are getting cut. If you would take you wifes or girlfriends pantyhose and slide them through the eyes of the rod any cut or scratch will cut and pull on the pantyhose. Just make sure the pantyhose are old ones and off the wife first.

Or you can swirl a Q-Tip around the inside of the guide and any cracks or grooves will snag some of the fine cotton. And the wife probably won’t belt ya’ one for going that route!
Most rods of any quality purchased in the last couple years will have guides that will stand up to fireline. No problems.

August 9, 2002 at 3:09 am #245153Thanks guys. Ecnook becarefull or you may be the shortest lived EFN guy if those 3 gals find you tearing their hose with your rods.
Fireflick, are you trying to get Ecnnok in trouble? lol.Brian LyonsPosts: 894August 9, 2002 at 3:21 am #245155WOW what a tip!!!!!!!! I’ve been working this pantyhose thing since the first post this evening. After many many guide checks and a few open bails all is in great working order ……B
August 9, 2002 at 3:23 am #245156well the pantyhose idea was great… but I was delayed doing the test after I got them off my honey….. *blush*
now what was I supposed to do with them? I seem to have forgot!August 9, 2002 at 3:29 am #245158Rivereyes, I just don’t know what we are going to do with you. How can anyone catch fish when they are toooooooooo busy trying to keep from falling out of the boat from laughing toooooooo hard. LOL.
August 9, 2002 at 12:49 pm #245167Thanks fireflick; that panty hose idea I’m sure , will take care of my dad’s question. In the future if I come across the same problem, I’ll probably try the cue tip idea because my wife just don’t understand such things. In fact, the last time my wife went with me fishing, I had to bring along the color AC/DC //VCR TV so that she could watch her movies out in the boat. {John}
August 10, 2002 at 3:50 am #245201FireFlick!!! You just gave me the reason I needed to introduce myself to the girl next door!!! Now, all I gotta figure out is how to get what I want without getting slapped!
August 10, 2002 at 10:44 am #245210LOL! That wouldn’t work for me, because once I got the nylons, all I would be able to think about is, “Gotta ditch this hottie so I can get home and check those rod guides.”
Don’t suppose you can recommend a good psychiatrist?
August 14, 2002 at 1:44 am #245353i have used fireline for several years and like it alot.one thing i found out is you want to keep the drag on your reel loose.the line is very sensitive but has no stretch.if you fish the river a lot and set the hook on a snag,you put a lot of pressure on the bail and internal gears,believe me i know.had a quantumm energy reel that i used,and it started slipping,took it to the repair man andhe pointed out the bail,and when he took it apart,the gears were really stripped bad.had to trash that reel,only good thing is i get to buy a new reel.but i will keep the drag loose on this one.if you keep the drag a little lite,it might keep the rod from grooving,you can always tighten it when fighting a good fish.this is what i know about fireline,but i will still use it…..eyesrit
