Several of us are heading to Guttenberg Saturday. I kind of know the river between PDC and Bueny from previous trips. This is our first chance to get out this year, and we are pretty new to fishing the river. What suggetions would anybody have? Would we be better off above the dam or below? We are hoping to fish for walleyes or smallmouth, basicaly whatever will bite. Is our best move to drag cranks, 3-ways, or try to fish wingdams? If wingdams what is the best approach for this time of year. Still learning so any help is greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks – RFahr

RFahr, the one thing that I’ve found to be most valuable is this link.

The info is the same as what’s on here, but you can ‘stretch’ and look at the last 7 days, the last month, two months, whatever. Usually I look at the last three months to get the big picture of “how high is it?” Then I look at the last seven days to see what the current trend is.

Right now, the three month chart shows that the river is high/spring flows, but the seven day shows that it’s dropping like a rock. I would start at the entrances and mouths of cuts where the eyes have been hiding out of the main channel current. Maybe deep on a nearby wingdam or two.

I haven’t been up on pool 11 for quite some time but I have been getting quite a few walleye on wingdams down on pool 12 at Dubuque. I’ve been getting them with a 3-way Dubuque rig and casting cranks. The river is not as wild and high as what you might think and it is dropping. There is still strong current on some of the dams. Look for dams out of the heaviest current. If the water continues to fall as it is projected then most of the wingdams should be fishable this weekend.

I was out at Dubuque last night for a couple hours and found fish on 2 of 3 dams I fished. Pretty aggressive bite again last night.
