Hi guys I,ve been reading alot of posts lately about casting spinners on wingdams . But I,m really not sure on how your making your presentation. I tried last night on pool 13 using a spinner rig with a sliding sinker about 4
ft. up the line and didn’t have any hits. fished this way for about 1/2 hour then got snagged. The whole time i was fishing this rig i wasn’t sure where I was supposed to be casting, straight at the wingdam or parallel to it like a jig. And also I wasn’t sure if I should real it in faster like you would a Mepps spinner for bass or if I should real slowly then let it set, I guess I need some spinner 101. thanks BIGJIGGER2002

I don’t cast spinners when weighted in that fashion. I hover in front of them using my bow-mount electric or most often, my kicker motor. I position my boat above the part of the dam I want to fish and far enough in front to allow my 3-way rig to settle down to the base of the dam. No need to crank in the spinner… the current will spin the blade. Then any moving is done with the boat as I use my electric or kicker to slide along the face of the dam… the spinner never leaves the water or the strike zone… if you do it right. Its the pinnacle of boat control. When you’ve got it down it looks so easy and smooth. When you’re learning… well, it looks bad! Keep practicing! Also, if you don’t like losing spinners…. don’t even try this. For a full day’s fishing I tie up 20+ spinners and frequently lose them all in a day. That’s no big deal if you make your own and don’t mind losing a little equipment.

Now if you want to cast spinners on dams, I’ve been experimenting with this product and been doing really well. I was going to do a product review on it, I guess I still will… but since you asked, here you be –> Mepps Spin-Flex Spinners

These babies cast very well and have terrific hooks. Since they’re an actual “count down” lure you can get a real good feel for how deep these lures sink before they lodge in the rocks. They can be purchased right on-line there from Mepps but I’ve found Fleetfarms, which carry the whole line, has a much better price on them.

    Any other questions, just holler!

Hey James thanks for the reply that eliminated some things I was wondering about, but it is hard for me to tell right where the actual wingdam is alot of times. I have never tried this with out anchoring and casting jigs. How close dop I get to the wingdam while trying this method you talked about. And how long do you hover around in this spot? And I was also wondering on what size of sinker you use for this summer pattern

Spinner balde size will influence greatly the weight you need… but I’m usually using 1 – 1.5 ounces when I do this. The larger the blades you sue, the more weight you’ll need. Smaller… less weight.

Distance from the dam? 30 – 50 feet usually. Further on a deeper dam with more flow… closer on a shallow dam with less flow. You’ll get VERY proficient at reading the location of the dam… before you get good at this. Afterall, you can’t fish in relation to something when your not exactly sure where that thing is! Practice and time on the water…. that’s everything.

How long will I hover in one spot? I prefer to constantly be on the move actually. I just slide real slow! I may be focusing on a small area but I’ll still slide side to side within that small area to get that bait in front of as many fish as possible. No bites within 10 minutes, as long as I feel I’ve fished the area real well…. I’m gone!
