I don’t cast spinners when weighted in that fashion. I hover in front of them using my bow-mount electric or most often, my kicker motor. I position my boat above the part of the dam I want to fish and far enough in front to allow my 3-way rig to settle down to the base of the dam. No need to crank in the spinner… the current will spin the blade. Then any moving is done with the boat as I use my electric or kicker to slide along the face of the dam… the spinner never leaves the water or the strike zone… if you do it right. Its the pinnacle of boat control. When you’ve got it down it looks so easy and smooth. When you’re learning… well, it looks bad! Keep practicing! Also, if you don’t like losing spinners…. don’t even try this. For a full day’s fishing I tie up 20+ spinners and frequently lose them all in a day. That’s no big deal if you make your own and don’t mind losing a little equipment.
Now if you want to cast spinners on dams, I’ve been experimenting with this product and been doing really well. I was going to do a product review on it, I guess I still will… but since you asked, here you be –> Mepps Spin-Flex Spinners
These babies cast very well and have terrific hooks. Since they’re an actual “count down” lure you can get a real good feel for how deep these lures sink before they lodge in the rocks. They can be purchased right on-line there from Mepps but I’ve found Fleetfarms, which carry the whole line, has a much better price on them.
Any other questions, just holler!
