I have always avoided fishing immediately after a cold front if I had a choice of other days to fish. Several days ago I had set plans to fish with my brother, and a cold front passed our way the night before here on pool 14. We went out before sunrise and fished several hours with very little success. Fishing slack current areas, deep holes, sand bars, etc. My trolling motor started giving me flack, so we decided to anchor and fish a wing dam that had been productive the week before with stable weather conditions. There was a stiff easterly breeze, rising barometer, and bright high sky. We anchored above a small hole or depression in the wing dam, where some tree limbs have lodged in the rocks. Tossed crawler rigs with a small spinner in line, and moved them VERY slowly to the boat. In 3 hours on that spot we boated over 35 eyes, with more than enough 15″ plus fish to fill 2 limits. The fish were very light biters, causing us to lose many fish before adding a second hook on our crawler rigs, but we had a very good day on what should have been a tough day all around. When things slowed there, we moved to a similar spot on a nearby wing, and caught 3 very nice 20″+ fish, before calling it a day. Just goes to show the more you think you know, the more you have to learn!
Pool 14 is litterally packed with 12-15″ fish now. It is a very nice sign for the short term future of this pool. Great population of young fish, and a very good spawn in 2001 should keep us in the eyes for the next several years!
