With the spring high water season starting, how long does it take the fish to congregate? I’m sure the current has increased dramatically since Monday and will continue to rise and increase. Do the fish react almost immediately? I’m assuming we are close to spawn, but since I haven’t been on the water lately I’m not sure what the water temps are. Does the high water slow down the spawn or do they keep right in stride??

    Thanks!!

the fish react to rising water instantly… they feel the pressure of the current change and they immediatly move to a break…. it can make it hard to stay on fish if the current changes constantly during the day…. you need to find permanant current breaks such as snags and points and wingdams…. humps and dips work too but are harder to find and stay on…. rising current does not affect the spawn only the location of the fish… rising temps is what has the biggest effect on the spawn…. rising water is usually good for spawn success but quickly rising temps is bad and Im afraid the water temp may be rising too fast…. when this happens spawning success is greatly reduced……

Thanks man!!! I was just thinking this rise in flow should make fishing “easier”. The fish had been so scattered I was hoping they would start holding in the more traditional areas. I guess I’ll find out on Saturday!!

What is the temperature that walleyes normally spawn at?

The general figure I have seen is about 48 degrees. Since it is not based merely on temperature there are other variables. But you also see the figure ranging from 45-50 or so. Also keep in mind that a shallow bay will warm earlier than the edge of the channel. Chuckles
