I was wondering if there is any place to fish from shore..I am heading to LaCrosse this weekend and would like to get out and possible catch some walleye or crappies. Any info would be great. I don’t have a boat so that is my #1 problem at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

You can fish for Walleye along the rocks by the upper landing at the Dresbach dam. There’s a wingdam directly below the information center and it has been known to produce from time to time.
March 30, 2005 at 1:38 pm #353431Are the water levels high right now? I tried to go on the river in the Eau Claire area last night…that current if flying besides the fact that the water level raised about 5-10 feet
March 30, 2005 at 1:42 pm #353422The water is about 2ft higher than the norm. The current on that side of the river shouldn’t be too bad.
March 30, 2005 at 1:46 pm #353436Hey bowhunter, i used to live in LaCrosse and heres where i fished at, these wings are pretty good and there should be a few walleyes on the sand above them and walleyes and smallies below. Go to the bridge that goes over the miss to the minnesota side. Go across the bridge and after you go over it go about 2 to 3 blocks and theres an entrance to pettibone park, turn in there. Go into the park and take the road to the up river end of the park. Theres a place to park there where the road bends. Walk to the shoreline and look upriver and you’ll see the first wingdam. You can start there or fish the second one up from there. I like the second one better. If you don’t do any good there go to the next one up from there. The second one, or the middle one of the three, is the best out of the three that are there. If you have a pair of chestwaders bring those for fish that are above the wings on the sand and ontop the dams. This wingdam is a pretty good spot and i stop there everytime im up in that neck of the woods. Bring some minnows for your jigs and a slip bobber and drift with minnows just off the bottom or use jigs with minnows and stinger hooks on them. You should get some bites. Try to cast out a good throw and just let the minnows drift right on the bottom. Theres between 4′ to 7′ of water along this stretch and about 8′ below the dam, fish are in there. Good luck
March 30, 2005 at 1:55 pm #353441That’s a good place to try too. Anywhere along that stretch should have some fish on it. I would not hesitate to try the beach itself.
March 30, 2005 at 2:06 pm #353445Your right fleck, the beach would be a good place too and its right next to that deep hole and im sure theres probably fish in it.
March 30, 2005 at 3:27 pm #353477You can also catch fish right under I-90 (MN side) by casting a jig and plastic out to the bridge pilings from shore. Casting rattletraps around the landing shouldn’t be too bad, either!
Good Luck.

March 30, 2005 at 4:41 pm #353514Thanks for the replys so if i am technically standing on the minnesota side of the river, I would need a minnesota license, atleast that is what I would think. Might have to hit up a bait store in the area to pick up an out of state license…whats a few more $ ? I really haven’t got a clue as to what bridge your talking about and what not, or any clue of the area. My girlfriend goes to school in LaCrosse and she told me to bring my fishing stuff, she wants to catch some walleyes, so I will do my best to find this spot. Fathead minnows? she will love the slip bobber fishing!! Thanks for all the tips guys. So this park place is west of lacrosse up hwy 61?
March 30, 2005 at 5:09 pm #353522YES THE PETTIBONE PARK AREA IS NORTH OF THE NEW 14/61 BRIDGE ACROSS THE MISS. THE AREA THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IS ON THE NORTH END OF THE PARK ALSO RIGHT ACROSS FROM RIVERSIDE PARK IS OK INSIDE RIVER BEND AND A WING DAM ALSO A BEACH AREA. THE OTHER AREA THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT IS AROUND THE I-90 BRIDGE AREA MIN. SIDE. SOUTH OF THE BRIDGE IS ALSO A LONG RIPRAP POINT WHICH IS GOOD AS LONG AS THE WATER DOESN’T COME UP MORE (MIGHT COVER IT) BUT ITS GOOD FISHING ON THE MIN. SIDE OF IT IF WATER IS GOING OVER IT. ONE OTHER THING IS THEY HAVE A FLOAT ON THE WIS. SIDE NOT SURE OF THE PRICE BUT YOU RAISE THE FLAG BY THE LANDING NORTH OF THE INFORMATION REST AREA AND THEY WILL COME AND GET YA.
HOPE THIS HELPS
March 30, 2005 at 6:32 pm #353413No Minn. license needed between the railroad tracks on the mississippi river up here. There are tracks on both sides the river as long as you are fishing between them on the river you are good with either a WI or a MN license.
Go Get them! Try goose island as well. Back water bays for crappie.
March 30, 2005 at 7:41 pm #353565Are any of these spots the guys where talking about between the tracks so either license will work?
March 31, 2005 at 12:05 am #353643If your GF goes to school here, she will know where Pettibone park is. Its Just across the two blue bridges..(Cass St.) The beach they are talking about is almost Under the blue bridge. There is a wingdam just above the beach thats a good spot for eye’s and smallies too.
April 2, 2005 at 3:07 pm #354405About pettibone: keep in mind that those wingdams will be flooded….Look for the ripples in the current…otherwise you should be good!
April 2, 2005 at 3:10 pm #354406another thing….I dont know if anyone ever does this, but if you head up to the north END of River Side Park, you will find the mouth of the La Crosse river. That should be a good spot to find some spawning walleyes. Also, i believe there is a nice hole below that mouth. YOu can also try the north end of Houska park..If that is how you spell it. IT is down by the sewage plant and it smells, but on the north end there is a small walking bridge and you can go down underneath it and throw rattle traps and cranks. There are some really good walleye in there….good luck!
2Fishy4UPosts: 973April 2, 2005 at 10:15 pm #354431No Minnesota license needed and after reading the replies the folks that responded gave you some great places to fish. I am from Winona, MN. and the Dresbach Pool from the Dam to LaCrosse has about the best shore fishing in the area. An opinion, but much better then either Winona or Trempleau. Nonetheless, one other thought is to try the Spillway on the Minnesota side; It is about 8 miles or so north of Dresbach, stay on Hwy 61 till you see it.
