This may sound silly but, will a female walleye release all her eggs at once and be done or could she release them over a period of hours or even days……just having an inquiring moment.

They only spawn once a year, but seldom do they drop all their eggs at once. Conditions at the time will dictate how long it takes an individual fish and even then some fish will carry a few eggs through out summer. These will eventually be absorbed.

It is common for male walleyes to nudge, or headbutt (ram) females to get them to drop their eggs.

Another thing that has been discovered is that with stocked walleyes, many people say they don’t spawn, but that is not exactly the case. They still, by nature, go thru all the rituals of the spawn, but for some reason, if the ratio of males to females isn’t right in the spawning area, the females will not drop their eggs at all, and reabsorb them until the next year. Biologists are just starting to study this about stocked fish.
