This was my first day to pool 4 this year, sorry to say it, but true. could not get there til after 11am so missed better early morning bite. from late morning to 2pm very slow fishing at the Y and up on both sides of the main channel by the dam. after 2pm started to get some steady bites drifting the Y, with superdoos and ringworms. Attached is my friend Steve with the nicest fish of the day, and the nicest fish I saw caught, a Walleye at 18 inches (oystershell ringworm). also caught a few Saugers at 16 inches (char/pep superdoos). The water level was LOW and SLOW, not much current and about as clear as I’ve seen it. So with some soon run off, a stronger current and some water color (dirtier), things will just get better and more consistant. Saw and talked to Zamer a little bit also. Hopefully during the Tournament this morning there will be some nice reports and pics.

Also found BrianK’s Mallard’s, who were going from boat to boat looking for him and a handout. we didn’t have anything to offer, but am sure they found some lunch.

On the Wisc side of the main channel, found a large area of Beaver activity. this cutings looked fairly new, but am sure they are not. most of these chewings were just in mainly one big area. Jack..

If you look at those mallards closely you’ll find that the hen isn’t a mallard at all, it’s a drake black duck, spent about two hours watching that same pair last weekend. The olive bill is a dead giveaway as hen mallards have orange bills.

Jack when you talked to Zamer did he say how he was doing . I was to be there but a bad case of sinus infection keep me home. What a bummer. Sure wish I could have been there. Things are looking better and hope to get to Little River Sun. Temp is to be 65* . Southern Iowa. Hope to be up that way soon. Jim

18fisher, things will start to get better as soon as we can get a little more current and dirt in the water. the conditions right now are about as tough as it can get. clear, and low flow. to also help out, take a friend with you and go out with Dustin or James. These two guys live on the river and can REALLY show you how to fish the river, and learning things you can use all year long. keep going, and keep learning.
LittleB- Black Duck??? I’m amazed at what I can learn here.
Chappy- at least I got to sleep in before I made the trek down to the river.
Good things are right around the corner here on the river. hold on to your hats, boys and girls, . Jack…

yup i too seen those two ducks up there on friday. there is actually 2 pairs that ive seen beggen for food. noticed the same on the black duck. her head is always a giveaway and with her purple wing spectrum instead of the mallard blue too. its actually a hen, not a drake. the drakes have a more yellow bill like the drake mallard and the hens are more olive green. what were ya thinken man, gay ducks!!! lol most of the ducks ive seen have been paired up already too. its to bad when they cross like that because hybrids like that cant mate again. they can cross again but once its half black and half mallard they cant mate. same thing with saugeyes and hybrid stripers

Friday was one of our better days for bigger sauger and numbers were’nt to bad either. The bigger fish came below the Y. Catalpa, chartruse pepper, and bright craw super doos got most of the fish. I had my usual Fri. partner Dale Gappa, and first time winter fishing, Phil Hatten along.

Phil is in the photo above.

Fished the tournament Sat. and it was a lot slower for us. Super doos below the Y again. What happened to the 44 degrees and light winds that were predicted?

Here’s one of me from Friday. I did’nt notice the white on the tail until I looked at the pic. It had spots on the dorsal. Could this be a saugeye?

    Kerry,
if the dorsal had definite spots, it sure could be a Saugeye, would have to get a closer look. a beauty fish though. good job on fri. Jack..

Glad to see you guys had a good time. We caught a 22″ and 24″ later in the afternoon, but all in all, the fishing was pretty slow. We fished the tournament on Saturday and it started very good. Caught two nice 18″ right off the bat, and then not another bite until I caught a 12# carp at about 2:30pm. Still had fun, good seeing you on the river.
