Made it out on Saturday for the second weekend in a row of open water fishing in February!

Hit the water right at sunrise and went to work casting ringies shallow to rip rap. Found decent numbers of walleye in the 18″ to 20″ range but the action wasn’t fast and furious. Did a little jigging at the dam later on and caught a few but the size wasn’t great except for one nice 20″ sauger.

We also took a jaunt down river to check out a couple spots and found lots of bald eagles but no fish.I thought about checking to see if the back channel had maybe opened up but figured it was probably still iced in so I didn’t bother. Anybody expect it to open up in the next couple weeks if it hasen’t already?

In the afternoon we went back to casting and found some pretty nice fish that were on a tear with several 20″ plus fish. No piggies but altogether for the day we were able to put a good two man limit of walleye in the boat before we left.Although I tried other colors the best was oystershell as mentioned in the recent reports prior to our outing. Hopefully the weather will allow for some more trips this month!!

Awesome pics Chris. Thanks for the reports. Care to share what size jigs you’re pitchin? Have you noticed a color preference as far as jig color goes or not?

Nice catch Chris . Thanks for taking the time to give us a quick up-date. I did not have that good of a morning bite on Sunday either .

Hey Greg I think your right about the hat! Those bomber style hats are sweet. I was wondering if the bunny hat would make a comeback!

Steve, I was using mainly the unpainted 3/32 and 1/8 oz. H2O’s. I do usually have at least one rod rigged with a contrasting color jig like orange or purple but didn’t see much of a preference. Was that you I saw later in the early evening?

I’m always amazed at the number of 1/4 oz. or heavier jigs with 3′ of line still hanging off I pull out of the water when pitching 3′ to 10′ of water. I do see guys out there give up on this technique out of frustration. If your casting to the shallows and constantly getting snagged up try going to a lighter jig. You’ll still get the occasional snag but hopefully alot fewer!

Got out Sunday afternoon with my friend Jim from Hager City. And it was brutal. But Sunday was the day I could go. Anyway, we got a couple of tiny saugers up near the dam on super doos. Then we decided to go chase walleyes away from the dam. Did manage to catch one nice 17″ on a purple ringworm casting the riprap sand transition. We probably would have done better if we could have kept our hands warmer. I at least got out and I caught fish on plastics. So I am a happy camper about that!
