I’ve spent the last few evenings on Pool 2 doing one of my favorite winter activites: pitching plastics to trophy walleyes. It ain’t easy, it ain’t warm, but my it can be rewarding. I’ve had one big fish in the boat each of the last three nights, along with a smattering of 19-23″. All the fish have come off of wingdams and all on H2O precision jigs with ringworms. Natural colors have been best … oystershell, firecracker, chartreuse pepper, etc. The first pic is from Tuesday night, a real pig of a 28″(see below). Second is my brother with a monster from the next night (Wed.) at a tad over 29″ (see below). Third is another look at the 29″, which was caught on a B Fish N Tackle firecracker ringworm on a BFT H2O precision jighead (see below). Tonight (Thursday) the big fish was 26″ (see below). And finally, my buddy Josh with a more average fish of 21-22″. (see below)
The river has been good to me over the past few nights. I have been throwing plastics at wingdams for a few years now and done pretty well, but a few months ago I hired Steve DeZurik to teach me more about pool 2 (I learned on pools 4 and 9) and boy did it pay off. He taught me a lot about this section of the river and that has helped me put some bigger fish in the boat.
Good luck, guys!
