Shallow bite at P4?

Has anyone heard of much of a shallow pitching bite going on at P4. With the clear water I’m sure anything happening will be early and late in the day, although I wonder if all this melting is putting any color at all in the water?

Thinking of heading out before dawn to see what’s up. I know you have to give em’ what they want at times but I’m pretty bored with the vertical thing .
    Thanks for any updates!!

Your answer would be yes, there’s a shallow bite going, but it’s not going super strong. Dustin had a good AM bite yesterday with a 8.4 Lb ‘eye and when I hopped in his boat yesterday afternoon we had good numbers of walleyes from 11 – 14 foot of water. We caught fish on paddletails and ringies but the ringies were the better bait. Oystershell, firecracker and pro-blue were the dominant colors with the pro-blue being our best in the afternoon.

Look for the full report with photos from Dustin later tonight. The next couple days should be great for getting out and putting some mid-winter ‘eyes in the boat. Grabs some ringies and get out there!

    James or Dustin,
Did you notice a pattern change from cloudy to clear skies?

Our best action in the afternoon took place after the sky had cleared off and the sun came out. Go figure. Once the sun started to set the fishing slowed off and we never really picked it back up again even though we fished right up until dark.

I got 2 nice fish dragging BFT Ringorms on Fin-Tech Knuckleball jigs in 8 feet on Friday. Didn’t work too hard at it.

We fished saturday up near the dam and had good action pitching oyster colored ringworms. We had 16 legal walleyes by 8:30. Off the water by 10am. Best depth was 4-6′ of water. Once the sun go up higher 14-16′ was the best.

Hit the water right before sun-up on Sunday. Fished 5 spots with out a bite until 8:45am . Was the worst early moring bite my boat has seen in years, not even a little one like the ones Jarrad had .

Found one spot about 9:30am that put out over a 2 man limit of walleyes and some decent sauger for myself and Darwin Viker in 10′-13′ of water. The eye’s were all 17″ to 19″, nothing bigger . Was off the water by 3:45pm. Jig/minnow did the trick.

Would have been a really good day if we would have saw that morning flurry of 6-12fish in the shallows.

My wife and I hit P4 Saturday and Sunday. It was great to be back out. We too found the bite slow. We could not hit with the plastics, although that may have been first-time-not-knowing-fishin-plastics- we’d always fished minnows on a slip sinker. We finally put about 5 eaters in the boat (15”-16”) at the dam in 20’-22’ early in the morning on live bait before 9 AM- it’s just that my better half boated 4 out of our 5 (that’s the way it ALWAYS is, and, I suppose, always should be…).

Met Dustin Stewart at Evert’s just as we were pulling out on Sunday morning, and I would like to express my appreciation for taking your time to answer some questions I had. Additionally, Steve at Evert’s could not have been more professional and helpful. My hat’s off to both of you- it’s people such as you two that make IDA the incredible site that it is.
