Got to hit the open water for the first time this year Lntony2 gave me a call this morning with the news that people were fishing below Genoa with boats, so needless to say we were off. I met Tony at the ramp around noon, and we were off to find an eye ot two. It started out good, with me catching a eater sauger right away. A little later, Tony (the eye catching fool), had to show me up, again , with a very nice 18″ eye. It then got real slow with only a few bites and some fish who spit the hook on the way up. I also caught a no good, stinkin’, slimy, rotten toothy critter, as well as a 3-4# cat. We then decided to call it a day, and things went downhill. We got the boat loaded with no problems, but the lip of ice wouldn’t let me get the trailer out of the water Tony chiseled a path for the trailer tire to crawl up, but it was still a pain. Finally after a nearly burned up clutch, the trailer popped out of the ice and I got to the top of the ramp. As I was driving around the parking lot I noticed the trailer tire didn’t look quite right. Yep, bent the freakin axle . I got it home, but boy does it dogtrack
So, the good thing is we got to hit the open water on a pretty nice day and we caught some fish . The bad part was it cost me a messed up axle . I got a pic of some other boats and the cat, but not the eye Next time the eyes get top priority before the cold saps the batteries again.

Len-As soon as I seen the tire bent, the first thing I thought of was one of your posts about a chisel and some boards I did have a chisel but no board. Tomorrow, there will be some boards in the truck for those kinf od situations. Live and learn I guess. If I would have been over another 2 feet, everything would have been fine as there was a place chiseled out the width of boat trailer tires. And yes, the water is coooold. While holding the cat for the pic, they about froze off

“no good, stinkin’, slimy, rotten toothy critter”

Are you talk’n about the best eat’n fish on the river?
Ya sure they’re a pain in the to clean, but mmmm-good just had some Sunday night. I suppose You kept that greezy channel! They’re only good for chummin’ flatheads (now there is some good eatin’) aren’t they! Just kidding, a little trick to getting that fishy oil out of channels is to soak the fillets in good hot tap water, mesage them a little, and you will see a film of oil on the water when your done. makes a difference. Do this before you freeze them also, the fillets will whiten up a little, but it’s not like there cooked. Filleting the skin off rather than skinning helps also. Things you probably already know, but someone else may not.

lalnx-Thanks for the tip on the cats. Actually I didn’t keep the cat or the northern, both fish do taste good, but are a bit more work to clean then I am willing to do As soon as I get my axle back, hopefully today, I am going to head back to Genoa and try and find a few more willing fish
