Ok, I can’t resist my 2cents added, since I am a weatherman for darn sake. Yeah, everybody should get a nice warm-up, but maybe not the 40s like you’d think. It’s gonna take a little time to melt off the snow, and as long as it’s around, I’d bet on temps in the 30s and low clouds/fog. Still great weather for fishing/hunting, (if you can suffer through the east wind). The cold weather will return by mid week like folks have said. It should be at least as cold as what occured around Christmas. If there’s snow on the ground, looks for highs near or just below zero north of Pool 14, and overnight lows 10 below or colder. If we can melt the snow (not likely), we could have highs around 10 and lows around zero. Fun fun fun.

Andy, how long is this cold snap going to last?
And what’s the outlook for the next 30 days?

I agree because i just posted the temps for James and his hunting trip as i read them only a minute earlier. Theres an old saying that i’ve heard for years and its about Iowa, its.. if you don’t like the weather wait a day because it will change and it did.

Yep, typical Iowa, up and down every three days. We’ll it does look like the cold weathe will try to stick around for around a week (at this point), but that’s really difficult to say since by the time we forecast out 7 days, I wouldn’t put any money where my forecast mouth is usually. Closer in, the way I still see Tuesday and Wednesday is mild(30s), but potentially icy for pools between 15 and 9. Either way, it won’t be pleasant mild weather, as that’s pretty darn rare in January, and never seems to occur with an east wind ever. Anyway, enjoy it for what it is; by the time we hit or go well below zero thursday night, 30s and icy rains won’t seem so bad!!

Hey Skyguy, your a professional weatherman and i’d sure like to know if this is true. Is there any correlation between the thoughts that when we get the longest and deepest snows in winter plus the long days and biggest measurements of rain in the warmer months that they mostly come from the fronts out east? Seems thats when it rains the longest, not necessarily the most but for more days on end its from the fronts from the east. The fronts that come from the west and south seem to just blow through and the east fronts when they make it this far west it seems they stay around longer, snow or rain.

Hey Mossydan, Yeah, you’re pretty much right on, though I wouldn’t call them fronts from the east, but just easterly flow(wind). This occurs as a large low pressure system moves from west to east, but south of your area. The counterclockwise circulation produces many ours of east winds, and light precip(sometimes heavier). Pretty much anytime we get clouds and rain or snow/ice in the winter that lasts more than a day, you can bet you have low pressure moving through Missouri or Illinois to your south. Keep up to date on the forecast the next day or two, as the “warmup”, may be much less than even what I said yesterday. ICE/sleet/rain and snow monday night through tuesday will be a threat (all be it not too cold), then the bottom drops out for thursday and beyond!

    Skyguy,

As a frequent fisherman on pool 4, I usually check out these 4 weather websites for the Red Wing area before I go fishing.

    http://www.crh.noaa.gov/forecasts/MNZ078.php?warncounty=MNC049&city=Red+Wing

    http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USMN0620

    http://wwwa.accuweather.com/adcbin/public/local_index.asp?nav=home&partner=accuweather&thiszip=55066

    http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=red+wing%2C+mn

In your opinion, is any one of these weather websites better than the others? Or is there another website that is best for this area?

    Thanks

    Hey Dave,
Those websites are all fine, but I do have my preferences. The weatherunderground and .gov (national weather service) are kept up to date by computer data and human input, while much of the time, the weather channel and accuweather are very dependant on computer model data…which is fine much of the time, but can fall way off of a good forecast if not check properly. I like human input in my forecasts! Anyhow, nobody’s perfect, but the nws site and weatherunderground are the way to go. Since it also has lots of river info, I think the nws page is best. (yeah, I do work there but that’s still my opinion.)

Its good to have a guy like you on this site Skyguy. Checking the weather is done every time before I go fishing and haveing the most accurate info is great.
Just saved the NWS site in my favorites. I did not see much wind info on there. Also is there a spot on that site that shows a moving radar? If not do you know of anouther site that might show it.

Also. Just to let you know I have never bad mouthed the weatherman.

    Hey Mike,

There’s lots of great sites out there. I think you can find wind info on the weather service one if you look. Maybe take a look at: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ifps/ifps.php?site=dvn

you can display wind data on the map here, and see what it’s like exactly where you’ll be. There’s a link letting you center it closer to where you live in the upper right, and pull-down menus to select what you want to display.

Radar data is available on that and all nws sites in the left side menu bar. You can view any radar in the country from that menu.

    Good luck!

I just wrote Skyguy about having a weather forum here at IDA. It might be too expensive to have a program made or designed, maybe it would’nt have to be done like that. Im not very pc smart and maybe it could just be downloded from the national waether service etc. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a forum here that you could come to too check out the fronts, pressure changes and what the weather was, is, and future forcasts. Guys could discuss what the fish, ducks and geese, deer, pheasants etc. were doing to sharpen up the approach to what they were doing and did. Maybe some of you computer gurus could give your input on what it would take to do this. Maybe even a link to check the radar at this site.
