Pool 2 update

After reading John23’s update on the 494 ramp the other day, I took advantage of it yesterday afternoon and put my jon boat in for a couple hours last night. The ramp was in much better shape than I had thought. About a 10″ drop off the edge was all right at shores edge.

Boated 2 walleyes and lost one…..25″ and one at 27″.

I was hoping to get out this week, but temps look to remain frigid. May try at the end of the week again!

Spent about an hour in half on Sunday morning getting the 494 ramp to useable condition for little boats….not an easy task.
As of right now, the ramp should remain in fair condition for the next couple days. Sounds like some nasty cold weather making its way towards us by end of the week.

Anyone have any news on the river/ice situation on Pool 2…..preferably the 494 area.
Just wondering if anyone has a bridge view from the highway on their way to or from work lately!

I am anxious to get back on moving water!

Pretty much froze over shore to shore at the airport. Some signs of it breaking up, but we need to sun and wind!

The ice was breaking up a little last evening when I drove over the Miss on 494. It was only in the middle of the river that looked like it may be navigable anytime soon. The banks were pretty well iced over, actually most of it was iced over pretty well.

I went across the Robert Street Bridge and toward the airport the channel was wide open. Toward Harriet Island, it was pretty iced up, but there was a narrow channel and it looked ready to break loose.

I dont know what they 494 area looks like, but usually if there is that much open water downriver of downtown there should be a nice channel below Pigs Eye.

I crossed the river last night at 494, what a mess by the way, it doesn’t look good from the interstate. The west side of the river appeared to be very iced in.

Here she is, Steve. A fair amount of ice, but with some effort and a chisel there’s nothing that will keep you out of the water. I cut a trench along the landing in a few minutes, and I think with an hour or so of work I could have had the thing open. I’ll be out by Mon or Tues!

Dammit. I just looked at my calendar and noticed evening meetings Mon, Tues, and Wed. Looks like the weather needs to improve by Sun night. Why do I have to work on the only three nice nights next week?

No sooner do I post that … phone rings … Wednesday meeting cancelled. Thank you walleye gods. How about 40 degrees a 30″er on Wednesday night, too?

    Amen!!!
    Thanks John for the pics.
Looks like the weather will be nice after all.
I doubt I will make it down there today. Tomorrow for sure I will be down, so I will have the ramp ready to rock and roll for you come Wednesday!

    Hey Steve!

My question is how do you get to the ramp? I drove around down in that area the other day and it is a construction nightmare. I know the ramp is there. I just don’t know how to get to it off of 494. Thanks sir!

    Drew,

Take the Hardman exit and go north to Verderosa, which is the second right after you go under the bridge (the first goes back onto 494). Take a right and follow it to the end, which is the landing. There is normally a sign, but they took it down for the construction, I suppose.

Couple things: 1) It’s really narrow getting in there and it’s not plowed down at the ramp so a small boat and 4WD are both musts right now. 2) Small boat is required right now, narrow entry or not. There’s an 8-12″ wall of ice at the base of the landing that you have to go over with the trailer.

The landing is iced in right now, but I got a start on it today and Steve will finish opening it tomorrow. Game ON.

Good directions John. I drove right to it and got to watch Steve and friend drop in the boat and shove an iceberg out of the way. Nice to meet you Steve. Man what a beautiful day to go out! I was feeling quite sorry for myself watching you guys head out. I hope you guys are slaying them!

Good to meet you yesterday drewsdad!
I would like to suggest that you hang your hat right here on Pool 2 and call it home as you live so close now.

After about a half hour of work yesterday afternoon, my buddy and I got the ramp opened up enough to drop my jon boat in. At the end of the night we decided to clear the ramp area as clear as can be. We worked using the boat as a plow and pushed several tons of ice down river away from the ramp and adjacent areas. Right now, there is no shore ice anywhere around the ramp. There still is a slight drop at the waters edge, but with about 1/2 hour worth of work, we could have that lip gone and you could drop big boats in there. The best news is we cleared all the ice away from the south side of the ramp all the way down the shoreline to prevent floating ice to jam up on any shore ice and freeze in place. This should open things up for the rest of the year barring no super cold snaps again. But teens and 20’s as overnight lows will be no problem to get in as of right now and the near future.

As for the fishing….lets just say the weather was awefully nice out there. The fish did not cooperate as much as I hoped. A few small fish were all we had to show for all the work we put in!!

Good luck to all that gets in this week!

    Steve,

    Thanks, buddy!

I’m still hoping to get out today and/or tomorrow if it ain’t too cold. Your work on the landing will make it that much easier for the rest of the season.

I certainly admire the perseverence guys! Wish I live closer to join the “fight”. I have to come over there for a couple days Feb 17-18…you think we will still be able to fish open water?

    Tom,

Like Steve said, unless there is a real serious cold-snap it should stay open for the rest of the winter. I’m awfully glad Steve did all that work yesterday!

Mike, I’m willing to be she’s in good shape for now. If the cold does come back in force you WILL get a call!

Thanks Steve! I’m sure I will have questions; but I’ll save them until I actually go out.

    Hey alvinmack5!

You could always take the bobcat and open up the 2nd ramp But that might be overkill. My Mr. Pike has been sending me mental suggestions. I blew the snow out around it. And today I bought outboard oil……

What is the condition of the 494 ramp?

Can a guy drop the boat in the water, or do you have to “slide” it in over the ice???

    I’m going out Saturday…..

Here is a pic of the ramp that I took at 1:45 today. There was a pretty good breeze and it would have been a bit cold out there.

Here is a closer look at the lip. It is about a 6″ drop and could easily be removed with some work. You should have no problem getting a larger boat in the water.

Hey Dean-any idea on the conditions of the women at KOD?

Maybe one more stop and a few more pictures are in order?
