Chilly days are here to stay, and ice chunks will soon be floating down the big Mississippi, but I made it out one last time today. With a small cluster of boats just below the LD15 on the Iowa side, we caught several decent walleyes and a good size sauger in 20-28′. All fish were caught on jig/minnow combos, with the largest caught (19.5″ fat walleye that weighed just under 4 lbs…had two big shad in the stomach) on a fuzzygrub tipped with a minnow. Many fish bit short and stole the minnow, and based on the amount of small saugers coming in to other boats, that probably was the culpret. In all slow action, but steady bites made the sunshine chill tolerable.
Your complementary weather update: Cold, colder coldest. Look for temps bitterly cold sunday, monday, and again wednesday and beyond. If you’re going to fish north of Keokuk after Monday, you’ll probably have to drill a hole.
