Going to be at the lake for 3 days in a couple of weeks. Need some suggestions on where to troll cranks: depths, kinds of cranks, colors, speeds, etc…

have fished the river during fall and early spring but never fished the lake. Love to troll crankbaits…can’t wait! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

On pepin I found it to be the most productive pulling lead core in the sand flats. Keep your lure rapping the bottom seems to work the best for me.

Or trolling with planner boards along the rocks with rapalas #5 and #7s.

A few places I would start would be either of the large bays in Lake city or the head of the lake, all great places to catch walleye. I usally troll 2 to 2.5 mph

My top colors are firetiger, pearl, and blue and silver.

I was out yesterday at the head of the lake and had 5 nice fish in about 2 hours useing #5 raps.

    Good Luck

    Wilk,

My experience was best with #5 shad raps and walleye divers. The walleyes can be a trick to tune when running 3-3.5 mph. Yes, that’s actually speed over ground. I know it’s ripping, but I promise it works, ask James. I didn’t have a chance to try my jointed shads last year, but I’m betting they will be an awesome bait down there given the water clarity. Favorite colors, natural shad, chartruese, blue/silver. Considering the water clarity, the more vibration the better.

For location, I start trolling the rip rap shorelines on both sides of the lake. I prefer the Wisconsin side due to lack of pressure. Right in front of the landing at Lake City can be productive at times also. As for depth, I would fish from 3 to 12 feet until I found the fish.

Watch for wing dams and I hope you have a blast!!! By the way, it feels like a mack truck hitting when you get a 16″ fish at that speed. I like a softer rod when trolling this speed also, doesn’t rip the hooks out of the fish’s mouth.

i am all set up to run planer boards but have never trolled leadcore. do you have to have leadcore to troll the sand flats or can you have just as much success with boards. Thanks for the info so far, i’ll be sure to try the places that have been suggested.

You don’t need the lead to be successful when you plan to be here. I actually find I catch more and larger fish since I gave up my lead core habit. Pool 4 heresy, I know…. but I rarely opt for lead anymore.

I would suggest 4 lb or 6 lb fireline. It will get you down fast with shad raps or wally divers and you can accually feel the fish when you get one.
