I just took a look at the weather for SE Minnesoat and it the weatherman is calling for highs in the 30’s – 40’s through next monday. After that we look to be slated for a cool down which the ice guys will like.

If you were thinking about fishing this weekend on the river the conditions look good. Next monday with the front moving through would be the day to be on the water to stick a biggun’!

Hey James I’ve been watching about four or five weather forecasts a day myself trying to gauge what the bite might be like. I’m hoping to get out Friday although it looks like it might be a little windy. If not, then regardless of the crowds, Sundays forecast looks pretty tempting for me. I might even try and sneak in a half day excursion on Monday morning. Was Dustin out today?

Sometimes the popular conception seems to be that river fish are less affected by weather than lake fish which is probably partly true. I do think weather has a larger effect on river fish then some people might give it credit for.

    Chris,

I was not out today but was on the river Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday . The casting bite was slower than it had been but was still able to pull around 20 quality walleye a day in the shallows, even with the bright sunny skies we had on those days. I will have a report up tonight with more details

We’ll be waiting for that report Dustin. The boy and I have tomorrow off so we will be heading out early to see what is going on. If it is cloudy and snowy then it may be a very good day. Anyone else going to be on Pool 4 tomorrow?

Tomorrow, no (rotten stinking job! ), but Saturday and Sunday, yes ! With temps predicted in the low 40s, this may be the last chance to fish wearing anything less than full ice-fishing regalia for a couple of months.

    James & Dustin

Looking to get out Monday for the big bite before the storm. This time of year, do you see it worth the effort to fish downriver from downtown or do you recommend working from Baypoint up? Not alot of horsepower to be running so trying to map out a gameplan for shallow pitching.

    Thanks

We basically fish from Red Wing and back north again.

James is right. I have not fished below the high bridge in Redwing over the last 3 weeks.

I would think the Coville rocks and Youngs cabin stretch would offer some good rip-rap fishing, these areas drop off to deep water fairly quick, do you typically look for areas that have a larger flat off them? Thanks for the comments!

So much for the clouds and snow today. The weather man blew that call!

Those are both good areas to target. The area at youngs has a good feeding shelf that drops at around 12′ in most areas, except for the points and fingers along the bluff there. I have been doing best on rip rap that plumets staright down in to 20 plus foot of water lately during mid day.

I like the areas with a several points and rock slides on them that provide a good feeding shelf best. Areas like this seem to be more consistant when the fish are active and on the chew, you will have fish coming and going all day in an area like this. Right now on the bright sunny days, areas that plumet in to the depths are seeing most of my walleye mid day. I am getting fish that are not really on the feed bag, they are more on the neutral side of activity when holding in this area but will still take a bait if presented at the right drop speed . Once the fish get active they will move to those areas with the shelfs and points on them along the rip rap to take advantage of the bait fish that are present…….and possibly a ringworm or K-grub

    Hope this answers your question.
