I braved the weather and the long walk to give vertical jigging on the float a try. I thought the weather change would have the fish snapping pretty good, but I had a heck of a time getting the 5 little saugers I caught in about 5 hours. Two were 14″ers that I kept, the rest were dinks. All of mine came on a jig and minnow. There was a guy there just nailing them, on a streamer fly on a 3 way rig. He was running about a 3′ leader, and about an 8″ dropper to a bell sinker. Never saw anything like it in my life, but I will definitely bring some streamers along next time. Has anyone ever tried this, or atleast know where I can get some streamers?

    ‘Sup:

I grabbed some bucktails yesterday at the tackle shop in Central City. The old timers at work seem to swear by these things under certain conditions, unfortunately, most places don’t seem to carry them. Gander Mountain and Fin ‘N Feather here in CR don’t stock them. We used something similar back east for large stripers called “shad darts”; basically a painted lead head with some buckttail dressing. One fella at work ties his own. I was surprised to see them at the store, so I grabbed 2 charts and 2 purples.

For now, (let’s keep our fingers crossed something doesn’t come up!) Rugbystar and I are heading out to the river on Friday. I got one other dude that is a maybe at this point, but if he bails, I’d have an open seat; won’t know for sure until later in the week. If I have an open seat, you’d be welcome to join us.

Joe, I’d be glad to join you, but I have to prepare for 1st season deer hunting. Some other time we’ll have to get together. And, what this guy was using definitely wasnt a bucktail jig. It was more of a streamer fly, it was unweighted.
Good luck on Friday guys, make sure you let us know how you do!

    Dave,

I still have my fly tying gear out, could you guess the color and size? Email me your best guess and I’ll send you some.

    [email protected]

    Thanks.

It was probably a 4″ long streamer, with eyes on it. It looked to be tied on a #4 or#6 long shank hook.
    Thanks ripper

I was at Lynxville on Sunday, caught a fair number of saugers, mostly small but had a limit in the 15″ – 16″ range, all on plastics, also a bonus 36.5″ northern.

I knew I should have went on sunday…He caught some on a greenish natural looking one, and on an orange one. Jon, were you on the float side, or the wall side?

Send me your address to the email above and I’ll drop a couple in an envelope if you are interested. Need to pick a few things up, go through the usual garbage prototypes, but it sounds like a clouser minnow on a wicked acid trip.

No weight on the streamer, other than on the 3-way? Sounds like a thing we used back east in the ocean to catch flounder. They called it a “Flounder Pounder” rig and used to tip the streamer with squid belly or a minnow.

Dave, I was on the float side. Very few boats out, I was surprised.
