I’m trying to decide where to go this coming Saturday. Anyone know if the guys below the dam are doing any good? Lots of delicious looking wingdams and rip-rap through that S-curve, too. Was thinking of maybe giving those first 3-4 miles a go before playing bumper boats.

Hey cornking, from what it sounds from past posts in gereral i think i’d go from atleast the lacrosse area up to alot better fishing around lock 5. I’d rather spend more on gas and get into twice the quality for numbers and bigger fish. its only about 5 hours north fromwher you wanted to go and the quality is fivetimes better. for another 20 bucks it seems a better deal to me. try lock and dam 5. just ask around at the bait shop on th main drag there and get fresh minnows with a stinger for vertical jigging below the dam, stop by Jarrads and his dads place on the main drag and they will tell you what to need to do to get into some fish, later cornking

hey Korn King, give below the damn at Lynxville a try. It was good for me a week ago with a limit of 15 to 18 in saugers. They where very aggressive and just hammered our jigs. The prize fish was a 5& 1/2 lb walleye. Stop at the falling rock for bait, Len has some good minnows and Len thanks for sugesting the cooler of purple for the day.
Good fishing to ya Korn King.
PS. oh and be patient as there is still alot of weeds to battle of the bottom

Hey Joe; My 50 four stroke Merc sometimes grumbels back when I try to start it at minus 25 degrees morning temp. This weekend I hope the temps come up abit for the sake of the icy ramp & my motor groans.

    Mossy:

Thanks for the advice , but I think I’ll have to wait until next year to head north to 5. Our third child is due in February and I have two little boys (5 and 3) that are still a little too young for an all day trip to the river in cold weather. I don’t want my poor wife to go stir crazy while I’m away, so I am going to be staying closer and closer to home; ultimately under house arrest when we get closer to “drop-time”. The first two kids came pretty fast, so I doubt I’ll be allowed to leave Linn county after the first of the year.

I can get to Lynxville in just a hair under 2 hours (not including the obligatory stop at Casey’s for an egg sandwich and hot coffee) so I’ll have more time in the water and less time driving. But I hear ya, sometimes ya gotta go a little further to get into better fishing or hunting.

    Gills:

The 50 E-tec came to life with no probs last weekend, but it was only in the low 30s. We’ll see how she fares Saturday morning. I’ve got the trickle chargers going in the machine shed, so the batteries should be OK.

    Wahly:

Unless the weather is dangerous or I hear the bite is totally dead, I’m planning to hit the water Saturday. If you see a couple of idots in an 18′ super-john with a 50 ‘rude, give us a wave!

    Happy Thanksgiving,

    Thanks for the update Len.

Assuming things go as planned (which would be unusual) we’ll be stopping in for some bait and info in the AM.

Falling Rock, is the float up and running yet or no? If so, how late into the season are you open til? What can be caught this time of the year?

Well, turns out I didn’t make it over to Lynxville today.

My crew was unavailable and I forgot about some stuff “we” had planned for this evening.

I’ll probably take this coming Friday off and make this the last trip of the year before I put the boat away. Probably head to Lynxville, though maybe someplace further-depends on my mood and the weather!

As usual, thanks to all you guys for getting me up to speed on the details.

    Hey Joe,

If saugers are what your looking for head out to the mouth of the Wisconsin River . I was there for about an hour and a half and pulled 8 saugers ranging from a couple of dinks to a real nice 21incher

I was using the new BFT Paddletails in Chart. Pepper and the Elect Blue pearl tail

Some deep water in that hole, where the Wisconsin dumps in. There’s one spot, just below Pikes Peak, that registered nearly 40′ on my graph last time I was over there in the early fall. Some of the old timers at work have some real fish stories about that mouth of the Wisconsin; except when you see the pictures from 20-30 years ago, you realize the stories are true!

Where you guys fishin’ pretty deep?

    Regards,

    Joe

The depth i was catching fish at was around 20′ deep, right on the break line…they move around acording to the flow of the Miss. and the Wi. just move around to different depths until you find fish…Don’t fish over 25′ deep because once you get over that depth most all the fish you pull out will eventually die…

    Good Fishing !!

I hear ya about the depth…and “death”.

When we were out last weekend across from Fulton, Ill. we tried as much as possible to stay in ~ 20′ of water or less, for the reasons already presented. The fish seemed no worse for wear, but you hate to kill those little guys which will be the fish for the years to come. It will be interesting to see if there is any correlation to an improved fishery in the closure area(s) in the upcoming years.

Hey Cornking, the mouth of the wisc. has produced some really nice fish in the past. I’ve got of a couple of inlaws that used to troll the mouth on the bottom and get big walleyes. They used to troll back and forth from shallow too deep then from deep to shallow. Another place they used to troll was the barge channel sides with deep diving tadpollys at lynxville. The roll a deck at the baitshop there in lynxville was full of thier pictures with limits of walleyes they got trolling the sides of the barge channel from the bottom to the top. There were days when the three of them limited out. This was 20 years ago too but i’d bet thier still in there. Over in Magreggor theres a restaurant by the railroad tracks, it used to be brown. If you walked inside and through the restaurant to the rear room there used to be a 5 pound smallie that hung above the door that was taken at the mouth of the wisc.
