I have a low budget fishing boat, but hell I like to go! I can get one of these sounders from a friend for $10 (he got it @ a garage sale for $10 dollars, never used it, and is now cleaning his garage). Is it worth the bother of even mounting it on my boat? Can they actually sound fish or are they just best for depth and structure? Depth and structure would be fine. Or is it better suited as an anchor? How about using them on Ice?

If you can see bottom on it that is half the battle. In the river if you do even see fish on the finder you still dont know what it is. I would think just being able to see bottom is much better than nothing. And heck if it does not work $10 is a cheep boat anchor now a days.

The Super Sixty is a great unit, and you can mark fish on it. The problem with flashers is that most people don’t have any idea how to use them. If you get someone that knows how to use it to show you, you can work it as good as well as a graph. The real question is, does it work properly. The transducers were the most common things to go wrong. If you get it, and the unit does power up and just doesn’t seem to work, take it to someone that can check it out for you. The unit is definately worth $10.

I still have a Super Sixty. Its a very dependable and durable unit.
Granted, I don’t hardly ever use it any more now, but would be willing to bet that all I have to do is hook it up to a battery and it would be ready to run like new once again.
The last time I used it was a few years ago when we took it to Canada. It hadn’t been used for years before then, yet it worked just fine on that trip.
I would never even think about putting that antique on the end of and anchor rope. It was one of the earliest depth finders ever. Following in the foot steps of the now famous Lowrance “Green Box”
The Super Sixty came in a yellow box instead though!
Congratulations, you own one of the all time great piece’s of fishing history!
You are sure to see this unit in a fishing museum some day.

Thanks for the input Mike W, TBO/MN & JWB. I took it out in the boat the other day and it apears to work . The transducer has a little dent in it (I believe from storage). I believe this causes a little fluter from zero to about 5 feet as well as at the bottom depth mark it seems wider than it should be (I was on a hard clay bottom). I will sand and or epoxy the surface to recondition it smooth again. Maybe this will correct the flutter. I didn’t mess with it to much, I didn’t have much time and wanted to fish
