Getting out of the house at 5am on a non work day was easy. Jon J. was my host for a bit of therapy at Red Wing. The wind was calm and the birds were singing , a perfect day to be on the water. We got to Everts at 6:30 and found that we were the only boat at the ramp. In a matter of minutes were on the water and heading toward Jon’s pick for the first spot to fish. The plan was to pitch hair jigs toward flooded timber for a while. It was about 15 minutes into the morning when I set the hook on a nice fish. After a fun give and take battle there was only a bit of dissappointment when the fish was at the net , a huge sheephead. It was the largest I have ever caught and tipped the scale at 11 1/2 lbs. After a couple of pics it went back. Now I was really pumped. Too bad there were no walleyes at this spot.
We moved a round a bit and Jon found a walleye and a couple of sauger that liked a crank pulled behind a 3-way rig. I still could not find a walleye. It was close to noon and we made a stop at Everts to visit Steve and get some minnows. It was time to try the dam. By now the wind had picked up to a steady blow right down the channel. There were good sized white caps everywhere. We got up there to find we were the only boat. The only other fishermen were on shore. We prepared to fish the first spot and I had a purple hair jig tipped with a minnow. It was only down about 30 seconds and a fish slammed the bait. I had another fun battle with a large fish. Memories of the morning were part of the conversation while I worked the fish. This time we were not dissappointed , a large walleye was on the surface. Jon slipped the net under the fish and I reached for the camera. A quick measurement showed 28 1/2″. After a couple of pics this spawned out beast was back in the water. We worked the area for another hour with nothing else to show for the effort. Talk about the right place at the right time. By mid afternoon we had enough and quit for the day.
Thanks Jon , I needed a day like that.
