All I have to say is wow.
Last night, just before dusk, my father-in-law and I tried the walleye action in Northwest Illinois….but NOT on the Mississippi (like we usually do). Time limited us to shore fishing, and I had no idea what we were in for in the next 30 minutes. We fished the Hennipen Canal, near the Quad Cities. It’s a small canal with some current from east to west and eventually connects to the Rock/Mississippi rivers. While pitching wallydivers into a road overpass tube, I pulled in a nice 15′ saugeye. I was impressed, since I’d never seen any walleye out this this canal ever, but had heard good stories. That was the end of my luck, but my father in law, next hooked into a monster 26 1/2″ walleye which was landed on shore by hand. It weighed in at 6 1/2 lbs. awesome. About three casts later, and getting pretty dark, he hooked a 25″ walleye which weighed 5 1/2 lbs. I couldn’t believe the luck! Alas, it was a cold night and raining pretty good, so we left. After recent dry spells on the Ol’ Miss, this one goes down as one of my year’s highlights for sure. Unexpected action rules!!!
