I will be heading out on Saturday and I was wondering if anyone had advice on which pool to try at this time of year. I have not fished the river much in the fall, so any ideas would be great. Distance is about the same from home to St. Paul or Red Wing just looking for an idea of where the bite may be better. Thanks

Pool 2 was putting on a good sauger and walleye bite about a week ago. Have not heard much from down there in the past week. Trolling crank baits in the hidden falls area was the ticket. Fish where easy to come by.

I had also seen a good school of white bass hitting the surface inthat area. Didnt have time to fish them but they area a blast when schooled up.

If the MN is still dumping mud in the river I would say the hidden falls area of pool 2 is the place to go.

I fished pool 2 last sunday for half the day. I spent most of my time pitching jig and plastic to wing dams James holst style. The current was just right for wing dam fishing but the water is still muddy. I caught one 3lb walleye afew smallmouth a flat head and alot of sheephead. The dam bite isn’t on yet so I would say head up river.

    Midnight,

From my years of experience on Pool 2, the end of October marks the start of a great fall bite. We are a little pre-mature from this bite being where it will be in a few short weeks. For right now if you are looking for fewer numbers but better quality, I would spend my time down on the wingdams from the airport and south. Pitch plastics, hair and cranks to the front faces of the wingdams. Normally this time of year is real good if you use the run and gun approach picking off the aggressive ones and keep on moving, but with the water a bit dirty yet, being a little more persistant at each producing wingdam may be what the doctor ordered. The fish are there, just have to work harder for less right now but the rewards are very good when contact is made. For numbers of fish, above the confluence might be a better suggestion trolling cranks along the shorelines from the confluence up to the dam.

When my Mille Lacs night guiding is over at the end of the month, I will be back down on Pool 2 from now until next May as I do every year. I am really looking forward to this fall season on 2. Should be another great year for big fish on the wingdams.

I spent the afternoon on pool 2, and I would have to say the bite has slowed since the last week and a half. We managed 8 eyes but worked for them trolling cranks! White bass are still active shallow as the shore fishermen are filling their buckets! If you need more action bring a scoop of fatheads along you’re bound to get on the bass!

Midnight. If the bite continues to improve daily like it has this week, I would head down to pool 4 near the dam. Fishing has really picked up down here.
