I f you guys/gals could only fish one spot in the spring on pool 4 (ie. the dam, the Y, hay creek area, diamond island, vemillion inlet) where would it be.

I think mine would be the wing dam area by the dam.

for years I DID limit myself to just one spot and just one technique.. and pretty much just ONE lure as well!!.. talk about a one trick pony……

I fished the first 1/4 mile from the dam… both sides, where ever the fish were biting best…. vertical jiging with a twister tail and minnow…. simple….. I would just wait till the fish were on a tear… cant miss action… and I would wade right into the tremendous crowds and catch my share of fish……

those days are long gone for me…..

still if you dont mind fight crowds there are plenty of fish in that first 1/4 mile….. but I DO mind crowds and I continue to explore and find new spots…. so far none of them are as consistant as that first 1/4 mile….. but they dont need to be because there are lots of spots and lots of ways to fish them!!

    BotM-

All the places you named are great in the spring,

I guess you would find me were ever the least amount of boats were in one of those areas.

Ive had my best luck from the cabin on Diamond Island 3-waying to the y at the dam on the wisconsin side. In the late morning thats were i have been catching the greatest number of fish.

But to go there every day all day that would not happen.

1/2 the year it would be the dam area, but the rest of the year (late spring to early fall) It is a toss-up between the wisconsin shoreline from the rush to almost Bay City and the shoreline at point no point. There are quite a few areas that are close to those, but they produce the biggest fish for me. The back channel areas are alot of fun and also produce big fish, but are also more crowded than the other areas.

Maybe it’s just that I didn’t know how to fish at all when I started going to the river or maybe it happened that I had my eyes opened up when I started going out with James Holst, but one single spot never quite made it into my mind as the top one. So many lures, so little time. So many places that could hold one or two good fish and so few trips to find them.

The river is a fabulous place to go and each trip I make gives me an opportunity to try out something new. Catching is great fun, but actually learning what makes the fish do what they do is even better. Pool 4 is always the place to be in my book. Anyplace on pool 4.

The thing that is nice about the river is that you can catch fish just about anywhere. Another thing is you never know what you might catch.

I could not imagine being forced to fish just one spot..however for the sake of the question..I thought about having to spend all my time in just one spot..it would most likely be the Bay City Flats..atleast from May to Oct I was where there are always fish..some big, some small..Sorry, but I don’t like the question i feel so trapped!! keep er’ on the bottom

We’ve had some great spots listed…. but the idea of being stuck fishing just one gives me the shivers. It would so completely collide with my style of “never sit still unless you’re creaming them” mentality. Plus, and this might be even more important, if I did have that magic spot were I could ALWAYS catch big fish and only got to fish that one spot, believe it or not, that would bore me to death. OK, maybe not right away…LOL

I love the way the hot locations, techniques, etc., change so fast when fishing the river. You have to be able to do EVERYTHING… from jigging , livebait, plastics, cranks, both casting and trolling, rigging, and on and on….

Keeps a guy from settling into a rut of getting too comfortable!
