I was looking to head down on Saturday for the day and was wondering if anyone would mind sharing any tips or technique’s that are producing fish for them?

    Thanks in advance!

Yesterday, September 29th a friend and I checked out how the walleyes were biting down at Lake City. We were on the water by 7 am and the fog was so thick we could have caught it with a knife! Because of this we pretty much stayed stationary until around 11am when the fog burnt off.:) Once the fog cleared we managed to catch a few nice saugers and they were all decent sized saugers. It ended up being a gorgeous day, but it was a bit chilly until the fog cleared. They only seemed to be biting on minnows and not clawers. Green and Chartreuse were the best producing colors. And the best news of all, only one small Sheepie. The DNR was next to us retrieving their trap net. Man, there were some darn big fish in that net. I mean 20 pounders plus. I assume they were northerns, catfish or carp. Good luck and please post a report when you get back.

Ya taking out the flatbottom or the Ranger? So if I book now do I get a discounted rate for providing a good supply of jokes ?

Not sure why you ask for tips Steve. Knowing you it will a complete success and you will have monsters posted in the reports for Monday as usual

    Mike,

I hope your optimism is dead on !! But, honestly I do not normally fish Red Wing this time of year. As most of your know, Pool 2 is my main stay and I seem to drift farther and farther away from Pool 4 every year. So, we will see what happens! Thanks for the encouragement buddy!

Thanks for an update on your fishing guys! I appreciate it…Looks like I got my work cut out for me.

    the flow is still up.
I was just chasing some of those pesky Bronze backs
I hope to get up to Redwing this weeekend.
maybe I’ll see you out there.
The fish should be on the move.

What a beautiful fall day. Just came in after 5 hours of pulling cranks. Took a while to find them, but I did catch a nice batch of eaters from Bay point up past Hay Creek. 6-8 feet of water 2-2.5 mph – either direction with a slight edge to moving downstream. Firetiger and Perch in the #5 jointed worked for me today.

    Yeah,

I was out early Saturday morning and spent the day looking for walleyes. Things were very slow for me. I have not been on Pool 4 since early August, so I needed some time to re-aquaint myself again. Spent most of the day at the head of the lake and the bottom end of the river. Chilly morning……

Hooked in to a couple carp that smacked a jig pretty hard and I thought I had a good fish going for a second.

Did make contact with a nice fish later in the day..but that was it for me! Sunday sounded to be a bit better for a few anglers. I did not make it up to the dam at all on Saturday. I will be down there this week again for a day to try it again.

I took my neighbor kid out on Pool 3 Sunday morning. I had heard there was a decent bite under the bridges at Prescott so we tried there for about an hour but only caught one small sheepie. In that time we only saw one big cat, a dink sauger, and a decent walleye or sauger get caught so we moved down stream to the wingdams. On the first wingdam, the neighbor kid caught a 20″ walleye. I thought we were going to have a decent morning but that was the only fish we found. We tried several more wingdams and a couple of current breaks on the rip rap that I thought should have held fish but didn’t find anything. We trolled Dubuque rigs and casted cranks. I was hoping we could find some stripers but I didn’t see any minnows or shad busting the surface. A very slow day for us but I still think he had a good time.

I was out on Sat. also. I didn’t do as well has Dee Zee, I only had 1 white bass for the day. I threw and pulled cranks from the bottom of point no point up to Youngs cabin. Water temp was 56-58 degrees. Still a pretty good flow and water was a bit dirty yet. Take care..

    Good to see you Kerry!
Thanks for stopping by and saying Hi!

Its pretty sad to say I did better than you did by having only one walleye on…..

Hopefully that water clears up a bit this week!

I am new to area and was thinking of going out Saturday to try and catch some walleyes. If anyone would be kind enough to give me some pointers on places to start would be greatly appreciated. I am new to walleye fishing and only know the basics, Thanks to my brother taking me to Leech lake for some spring time walleyes! I am hooked and wanting to learn more. Thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome to In-Depthangling.com C.P.R. I’m not sure what pool you were talking about, but #4 by Red Wing is picking up everyday. If you’re in this area, stop by and I can show you where to go….and where not to go!! Thanks.

    Steve;

Is the back channel still producing?
    Live bait or cranks?

Or, are they up towards the dam now?

Again, live bait, cranks, or is soft plastics the key?

    I’m coming down this Saturday…….

    Thanks in advance!!!

The bite i’m talking about has been at the dam. 3-waying floaters and minnows or jigging sonars are the two top presentations right now. Haven’t heard too much from downstream. There seems to be a little bit of a trolling bite with #5 shadraps still and the occasional nicer fish caught with light hair jigs or crankbaits casted to rip-rap.

I haven’t heard much about the backchannel for a couple weeks. Can’t say good or bad I guess…… The action for numbers is definitely the dam. Good Luck.

You’re lucky! Steve usually tells me where to go!
    LOL!
Seriously, take him up on it. Steve knows what is happening on the River, and how to get’em!

It’s really easy to know where to go….just do what I do. After Stewart leaves for the day, I go grab the GPS unit I place secretly in his boat. When I see where he went back and forth all day…..that’s where they’re biting! Really!!!! This works! As for the baits to use….whatever he has on his dash and boat floor…use the exact opposite bait. He tries to use reverse psychology and place the wrong things out for people to see…….He’s tricky that way!

Steve thanks for the info about three ways and sonars. I am sorry I did not get a chance to stop by and talk with you. We did go out Saturday and managed to boat 14 walleye’s with the biggest being 4lbs. Lost one next to the boat that was in the 5 to 6 lb range. Anyway we put most of them back besides three smaller ones for my wife. She would have killed me if I did not bring any home. Thanks again.

Glad to hear it C.P.R.! and good job on the released fish. Although we wouldn’t be offended if you would at least put the “5-6” lbers in the boat for a pic at least before letting them go! . That 3-way and minnow bite was fast and furious on Saturday. I had a chance to fish during the day and had lots of smaller sauger, white bass, some nice eyes and a few sturgeon on that! The sonars were also hot on Saturday for some nicer walleye. I can’t wait for the water to get a bit colder and then the plastic and hairjig bite will really take off. Thanks for the update C.P.R. Keep em coming.
