Pool 11-Guttenberg Report

We headed to the ‘Gut late this afternoon. We were on the water at 4:45pm and fished until 8:30 or so.

Being late in the day, most of the pleasure boaters were heading in, so things were pretty conducive to fishing. We started pitching cranks at some wingdams and after no takes, we switched to 3-ways with crawlers. I managed 2 cigars, one pushed a whopping 10″ and the other nearly made it to 13″.

We fished a slough known for bass and northern, and my buddy Larry got on the scoreboard with another cigar that utterly crushed his #5 Aglia he was trolling in hopes of interesting a northern.

If for nothing else, it was nice to see some young healthy fish in the pool.

Sorry I didn’t get back to you Joe, by the time I got your message it was well past your suggested departure. I couldn’t have gone anyhow, being as I had both kids.

I have visitors at work early this week, maybe Friday I can get out.

S’ok. I figured you were busy being Mr. Mom; I just called in the outside chance. You didn’t miss much. The most exciting part of the trip was the run upriver from Cassville to Guttenberg in the dark!

We headed back in at 8:30, I crawled upstream at a whopping 6 mph as I kept 1/2 of one eye glued to the sonar to monitor depth, 1/2 of the same eye glued to the GPS for heading, and the other eye scouring the water for the tell-tale reflection of a passing channel marker. It is very dis-orienting out there in the dark on moonless nights. I don’t recommend folks doing this unless they have some powerful spot lights, radar, or were born on a particular stretch of river.

We made it home OK, no misshaps of any kind, just kept her going slow and steady. Larry said I “passed” my IFR test… I hate to see what constitutes a failure…

Let me know about Friday. Larry is working second shift this week on JTRS and if I can get my IRAD crap closed out, I may be game.

The Guttenberg area bite should be improving soon, Joe. Maybe we will see you and John out there one of these trips.

I guess I was unaware that we had a second shift!?? We’ll see how my visit goes on Tuesday, that might mean I’m bustin’ my buns the rest of the week trying to wrap things up.

Pretty screwy, but I still have to burn a few days of vacation or I lose it Oct 1; then on Oct 17th I go on a cruise with my wife for a week and burn most of whatever’s left. By the time deer season ends, I’m not gonna have much left. The bad thing is that with me having a full week off in October, there’s a bunch of stuff I want to get closed out & tied off before I go, so I’m looking forward to a busy month.

Well, both Joe and Joe, keep me posted on when you’re heading up there. One of these days, I guarantee I’ll be able to tag along.

I love to fish Guttenberg. Glad to hear it’s coming back. For a couple years there it wasn’t exactly the hot spot to go.

How far down from the dam do you range? I’ve never fished it much in the summer so I don’t even know what’s down river more than a mile.

I’ve fished down about two miles from the dam, and then the Cassville area North about two miles. In between is no-mans land, which is probably where all the fish are.

For bass and pike, it’s always been a good pool for numbers.
