I was able to make my first fall (late summer) trip to the mississippi north of Aitkin over the weekend. After eating a big meal of fresh walleyes saturday night I hope to make many more this fall.
For anyone wanting to try some fishing on the northern streaches of the Misss. plan on running some shallow water. We ran alot of 1’6″ to 2′ water to get to the deeper holes. Hitting rocks with the motor was the norm but there are fish to be had in those shallow water.
It looks to me like the walleyes are starting to show up in the same holes as the last few years. Thats if you can call 6′ a hole. After making a few trolling plasses and picking up some fish we decided the presentation better be a little quieter or the fish will scatter. The anchor went over the side and we started pitching. Small blue crankbaits and jigs/ minnows took most of the 18 walleyes we caught. There was also a few northerns and smallies thrown in also. After keeping 5 of the tastyest looking fish we headed home. What a great fish fry.
I sure hope we get some more water on the upper streach this year. It is as low as I have ever seen it. Very clear also with being able to see 2′ deep in the main channel.

Has anyone ever fished over towards the crosby area. I am wondering what the water depths and boat landings are like in that area. I have been hitting the same small streach of river for the last three years and am wanting to see some new water. If anyone would like to swap a trip just let me know.
