I’m headed to the in-laws this weekend and Guttenberg is the closest pool. What’s the word on the walleye/saugeye fishing up there? Should I head to pool 10 out of Harpers or stick closer to the home farm?

I have been doing well on pool 11 with storm thundercranks perch color on the wingdams. Most all of the fish have been on the current side of the dams. You need to keep moving from dam to dam until you locate the fish.Friday I got 14 walleye Saturday 8 all but 2 fish between 15″-23″.Also good number and size of largemouth/smallmouth.Be alert as there is not much water over the dams.Stay to the channel ends of the dams and you should do well. All that I caught are still there.

This is good news. I have not fished this pool since early July and on each trip this year got skunked as far as the walleye and saugers go. Of course, to be fair, many of those trips were with a partially rigged boat early in the spring and with much less knowledge than I have today. Between my time with Ecnook last May on 9 and learning from this site, I feel a lot more confident in my river walleye fishing than I did just 5 months ago. There’s not too many places in Iowa prettier to fish for walleye than pool 11 below Guttenberg; pools 11-9 remind me of my haunts back in western MD and western PA in the Alleghenies. I may not do as well in pools 10-11 (I do well in 9, but its a haul from Cedar Rapids) but just being on the water in the shadow of the rocky bluffs is good therapy in and of itself.

Thanks guys. Plans got changed, so I won’t be able to fish Guttenberg this weekend. I’m glad to hear that Guttenberg is productive again. The brother in law has been reporting some lean times the last couple of years.
