Seems like Pool 9 is the place to be well we just moved to Pool 8 so so be it. I now know how a fish feels when he’s out of the water for a long time. I was almost afraid to launch my boat it’s been in the garage so long. But we are all moved and when I can sneak out the back door while the wife is painting or cleaning something I can make it to the river. Got out today for just a boat ride and did manage to catch an assortment of fish and did some scouting but didn’t do any walleye fishing. Is it safe to get on the water around Lacrosse here on the weekend? I’ll find out in the morning. Most people don’t get up that early anyway. If I have any luck I’ll let you know. Have to break in that new IDA hat anyway.

I’ll join you on Pool 8 bright and early before all of the idiots get there too. Maybe this cooler weather will keep some of them home or at the mall.

August 14, 2004 at 6:49 pm #317352Not too bad. I was on the water at 630 in the fog. Worked my way down stream from the launch at the Dresbach Dam. Tried some trolling until I found that rock across the slough going south. That’s a very interesting area I guess it’s concidered a wing dam except it’s quite a ways from the main channel and there are actually at least two your motor will clear on the east shore line. Lots of fish below these but no takers. Worked my way down stream no bites. Went up to the dam where there were a few boats and immediately started catching sheepshead. I saw one sauger caught and didn’t like the sheepshead so I worked the east shore down stream no bites. Boats really started coming out about 12 so I packed it in. Hope you had better luck Willeye.
August 14, 2004 at 8:52 pm #317356GF,
We put in at the La Crosse municipal harbor and went straight across and fished some of the wing dams on the west side of the main channel. We casted rattletraps, lindy rigged leeches, pulled spinners with crawlers, and bumped jigs above and below wing and closing dams. All of this resulted in 2 catfish, 2 bluegills, a smallie, and a largemouth. We also lost at least a half dozen fish that we are claiming were walleyes!
We would have moved more often earlier, but I am fairly new to the area and did not want to venture out into the fog. I need to get out there some day and mark a bunch of the dams on my GPS so that I feel easier about moving in the fog.
I see you’re from IA. My friend that I fished with today is originally from Nevada, IA and my wife was born in Atlantic, IA.

August 15, 2004 at 5:43 pm #317412Another foggy day, I put in, I call it the Perkins Ramp, and went south fished the east side of the Mississippi just where the Black comes in saw some fish on the depth finder but couldn’t get them to take anything. Talked to a couple fishermen they said they had been catching fish but not the last couple days. Saw one guy on the sandbar his wife or girlfriend was taking a picture of a nice fish they released. Went north up to the spillway and looked over some old holes I fished 34 years ago. Really hasn’t changed much. I’m embarrassed you’re supposed to catch fish when you post on here. I’m just showing the real side. It’s all about time on the water and I’m getting some now.
August 17, 2004 at 10:13 pm #317758Finnally my first walleye since moving here. Put in at the Perkins or Clinton St ramp and wemt south of the Cass St Bridge. Fishing a couple wing dams nothing. Fished some rocks near the barges and caught a nice 17″ went back up river and got into the bass stripers, large mouth and smallies. Had some fun
