Had the opportunity to jump in the boat with “Boone” from the site here for an evening of wingdam fishing on pool 3 last night. Despite the cold weather the last few days, the fish are still cooperating. Not a numbers or big fish night, but 8-9 fish in 4 hours with 6 being legal size. (All released) Not bad for a short trip.

I had expected a tuff go at it. But was still chomping at the bit to get out on the river. Glad we went. Pretty much had the river to our selves. Cold air, light rain = No Jet Skis!!

Boone, (an Iowa native and Dubuque Rig aficionado) and I worked several spots taking a fish here and a fish there. Not staying too long in any one area. Dubuque rigs pulled across the face/base of the dams. Boone has a milk run of spots that work well for his style of fishing. Had a fun time and look forward to doing it again. Thanks Dan!

I noticed the nice purple haze as I was putting a letter in the mailbox last night. I just about grabbed the camera, but I’m sick of sunset photos with my neighbor’s houses in them. Thanks for sharing the pics guys!!!

    Jon,

Thanks for joining me. I do like Dubuque rigging for a couple of reasons. First, you can offer the fish two options… the jig or the trailer. Some days they like the jig but most days more fish are caught on the trailer. Secondly, you can cover the base of a wingdam pretty quickly looking for the active fish. Generally if I don’t catch a fish on the first or second pass across the wingdam, I move on.

I don’t know why we didn’t get anything on cranks last night. We didn’t use them that much but I thought we gave them a fair chance. I don’t think we caught a fish after the sun had dropped below the tree tops… a time when fishing often picks up.

Thanks for answering a bazillion questions about boat rigging. It’s helpful to know why people like what they do so I can apply it to my situation to determine what’s best for me and the way I fish.

    Thanks Again,

    Boone
