Hey all. I have a couple of questions. I’ve never fished upper Pool 4 this time of year and was wondering if 3-waying the cuts and breaks, etc. is still good. Also, when casting bucktails, do you tip them with bait or just plain? Thanks

    Hi Tony,

You can catch fish 3-waying on the upper end right now but most of the side channel cuts are so low you are going to be better off dragging light jigs to get those fish. Most of the guys I have talked to recently that are getting fish on 3-ways are targeting 6′ to 15′ of water on the main channel clam beds. Other good areas are at the head of deeper holes right at the top lip down in to the hole.

Everybody has there own thing when it comes to hair jigs but I like to throw um bare with out bait to start. If fishing with out bait does not produce, I will put a small piece of crawler on the jig in hopes of enticing a few less aggressive fish .

Sorry Dave . Not time for me to have full confidence in those worms but real soon they will be the stuff.

One thing I left out of the original reply is 3-waying channel edges is a good bet right now with the lower flows. Most of the fish I have been getting on the main channel dragging jigs have been right along, or close to, the channel edge

Hey Dustin, thanks for this info. Another thing I’ve been meaning to ask, and since you brought it up, how do you find clam beds? I hear people fishing them, but I don’t know how to locate them. Thanks

Tony, my favorite way of fishing the upper part of pool 4 is with St. Croix Med. 7 Ft. Baitcaster Rods with 3-ways with a 1 1/2 oz bell sinkers with floaters. Next time you see me ask me how I run my bait and floaters and I’ll tell you. I have longer length rods and at times I will run the longer length rods if needed but I can usually do my most damage with my 7 footers. Thats just me though. Six to six and half footers work good too but I personally feel great with the 7 footers I run and can work those the best for me. They are my confidence rods. And I really love the St. Croixs. I’m a St. Croix Diehard. Thanks, Bill

The best way to find a clam bed is to spot them on shore or catch them trolling or jigging. Once you get a good feel for your jigs, you will be able to feel the difference in the bottom from sand, rock and clams.
