Snap on weights for trolling Pepin

I bought a snap on weight kit. The directions say to use the 50-50 system. That means 50 feet of line, then the snap on weight followed by another 50 feet of line. I do not envision myself liking to take the weight off when it gets to the pole so I can finish reeling the fish in. Why couldn’t you simply put a snap on weight 6 feet above the lure? Would this screw up the action of the plug? I am talking crank baits here. Thanks for your ideas.

I put mine about 6 feet in from lure when I’m by my self however it goes out to 10-12 feet with a partner. It can be a pain to remove the wieght by your self. You will need to adjust the amount of line you let out.

I wonder if you even need to go 6 feet from the lure.

I’ve often wondered why a larger rubbercore sinker about 4 or 5 feet ahead of the lure wouldn’t work. Evidently a three-way rig doesn’t mess up a crankbait enough to keep fish from hitting. I would think a rubbercore or your snap on weights would get a lure down those few extra feet to do the job.

Has anyone ever experimented with these types of weights vs leadcore?

    Guys,

Removing a snap weight, even by yourself, is just plain easy. Just some advice… don’t try to find a way to work around using these tools the way they’re designed to be used. It might take you just a few times to experiment and get a system down but from my experiences removing the snap weight is a 2 second job easily accomplished with one hand.

There’s a reason keel weights have gone the way of dodo birds and wooden shoes.

Instead of using the 50-50 meathod, when ever the fish are too deep for my crankbaits, I simply put a 1 oz snap weight 20 ft ahead of my lure. According to Precision Trolling, this takes the lure 33% deeper with the same amount of line out. Give it a try, hope this helps.

I purchased some electrical clips at a sports show 2 years ago that had dime size gasket material super glued to the clamps they work real well on the snap weights a little bigger and easier to release in the heat of the moment

Good tip here Joe. If you don’t mind I’ll elaborate a bit. Electrical clips or ‘gator clips’ with some surgical tubing or shrink tubing slipped over the pinching ends work pretty well. Not as good as some of the pinch pad style clips on the market but they’re VERY cheap if you put them together yourself.

Here’s why – the 50/50 method works and there’s a dive curve in precision trolling to tell you what depth your spinners or cranks are working. Not really a pain to use alone or with a partner.

Spend some time with the system and it will improve your arsenal to take more fish!
