Dull hook syndrome

Lost some real nice fish last weekend due to poor hook set. I have tried to sharpen the hooks coming out of the package but it seems to me the quality isn’t as good. Want to replace trebles with better quality hooks. Wanted to start a discussion on what’s out there that’s best. I use braid and mono with Fenwick rods. Thanks in advance

Gamakatsu without any thought to another brand. The EWG’s are super sticky. Even the size 10 standard round bends I use on my blade baits pop into a walleyes jaw effortlessly.
Few things I learned as I have experimented with quite a few brands.
Daiichi Hooks – sharp out of the gate and withstand a lot of catching of fish(IF THEY DON’T BEND OR BREAK) However, once they bend they frequently break easy when your trying to bend them back.

Mustad – tips roll over or break off easy

Trokar- Super sharp out of the pack. The tri-edge (don’t know their formal name for it) didn’t hold it’s edge or sharpness that well after a number of fish or bumping on hard surface. I think the tri edge they have is easy to re-sharpen if you don’t roll the tip with a file. Plus I think it takes a bit more effort to set the hooks. (when used with mono) But over all they are decent hooks.

VMC – I’ve only used the Barbarian Trebs to compare to the Gama EWG’s. Sharp hook and holds its edge well. I wish the gap was a little deeper. On a soft bite where fish were hooked by the lip, I had aa few shaking me off. If i had 2 of the hooks of a treb stick their jaw – no problem! If their other trebs are similar of quality, they would be a decent value.
But that is just my opinion

I had some of these given to me (10/0’s for big cats). I have to agree with Randy as they were great unless I hooked into a log or hit a rock. I’ll tie a new one one before sharpening a hook…but that’s me.

You said that you were using treble hooks? Trolling cranks or what were you doing? I never set the hook on a fish when I troll a crank I just “sweep the rod a little”. I also have had very good luck using gamakatsu hooks.

Mostly I’m talking about blade baits. Your right about pulling cranks but i still think hooks on cranks out the package are no good . Thanks for the info guys.

IMO–try bending the hook points out “slightly”. Seems to help w/hookups. GL

I’ve been replacing a lot of my trebles with the VMC Sureset, if you want a good rear hook too, you can match up with a standard VMC Treble too. Be careful though, or you will like them too much and change over all your cranks to those Suresets on the front. Yesterday I caught (3) 3″ Perch on the elongated hook from the Sureset I put on my #6 RipnRap; in fact, I don’t think I missed a single fish that hit that bait.

Just keep them sharp. Blade bait hooks can dull quick just because of how it is used, ripping off the bottom frequently.

    Keep a file close by.

A lot of times I will change up my rear treble hook to one size larger most of the time you lose a fish they are usually just nipping at the bait and not taking the whole bait.the larger hook will definitely help with hook up ratio. I strongly recommend using VMC treble hooks they are extremely sharp and super strong very hard to bend them.
