Fished Pepin out of Lake City Friday afternoon and most of Sunday. Whew. Fishing was sure fun, but the catching was pretty poor. Caught a couple northern Friday. Sunday other than a couple perch and sheepshead it was a bust. I tried mostly crawler/spinner rigs. Experimented a bit with cranks too as that’s what everyone else seemed to be doing but didn’t have much luck there, and the debris made fouling the hooks sorta a pain. Water is still high, but manageable. No problems launchin/loading. Water temp averaged about 55 degrees. Hoping things are just a bit slow to get going this year and warmer temps will pick things up.

In my experience 63 degrees has always been the “magic” temps out on Pepin late May. Once we get a couple warm days and the temp jumps a bit the #5 shad rap trolling bite will take off.

Joel and I hit this bite lat year late May and we put out a little video on how we approach fishing Pepin once the temps hit 63 degrees.

Great info. Thanks, James! I was just about to ask, ‘So what is the ‘right’ temp for the bite to turn on. And you just answered my question.

Joel and I will be back in the boat checking in on this bite later this week. I’m thinking Thursday will be the day. We will of course have a report back following that trip.

My son and I trolled Lead core on Pepin Sunday from Lake City to Bay City and put a one man limit of walleye’s and sauger’s in the box and a PB 30″ walleye that was CPR for James to catch on Thursday.

Nice fish! Glad to see someone had some luck.

Now if this rain would let off a bit…got a feeling the river level forecasts are gonna need some adjusting.

I will be anxiously waiting to hear how you do. I have had this coming Saturday on my calendar for a few weeks now anticipating this trolling bite to start.

No fishing for me today. My #1 daughter has a double ear infection and strep throat. Poor kiddo. I’ll be home doing daddy daycare.

I’ll have to live through those that get out today as a consolation of sorts. If anyone does get out photos and a quick report will be greatly appreciated.
