I have a decent amount of success and experience with blade baits more with plastics though. i wanted to get a little info out to help myself and others really dial in this tactic of fishing. Any info would be helpful. Things like what weight do you typically run obviously current effects this. What are your favorite colors, what lbs test and mono, flouro, braid you prefer, do you tie direct or use a clip, which hole do you connect to on the blade etc. Thanks for any and all feedback.

I did a blade bait report about a week ago, you can check it out here:
Also – James and Eric just recently did a show about blades and rattle baits:
James and Eric Blade Bait Video
Let us know if you have any more specific questions after checking these two out.
April 23, 2014 at 9:05 am #1405687Now I am not an expert and I don’t have as many hours put in as a lot of guys but here is what I have learned over the past 5 years of honing the blade skill.
rod and line – I use either a 6’10” or 7′ St. Croix Legend extreme MLxf rod. and 10 lb braid (this year 832 hi vis) which is 4 lb diameter. sensitive, fast action rod tip and braided line is ESSENTIAL!
I have used mostly 1/8 th – 5/16th oz blades. But i have never fished them over 15 FOW and mostly 1-10 FOW. so I can’t speak to deeper water uses and heavier blades.
The biggest thing (besides rod and line)that I have found is being able to present them (position the boat)in a way that works with the current. and in places like Eric Rehberg and James fished in their show the current and bottom shape is never the same year after to year. so you need to adapt your presentation.
Slow down! sometimes you want to force the subject and you hasten your cadence. really tell your self to slow your cadence and soften your lifts of the rod -but also feel the vibration. (also take the slack out of the line after your jigging motion- ie follow the blade with your rod tip back to the bottom).
good luck. and pay attention to videos and fellow fisherman that are catching. as much as our eagerness/pride blames it all on the spot where they are fishing, blade presentation with current, cadence, maybe color are more likely the keys to their success.
April 23, 2014 at 12:13 pm #1405734I am totally new to blades myself so please excuse some dumb questions.
Can I get by with an Avid 6’6″ MLF action rod? Thinking about it, I guess it boils down to personal preference in the end but does the extra length of a 6’10” – 7′ rod make that big a difference? Also, what am I looking for as far as spots to fish go? I’ve read that current seams are a good place to start. In general, when fishing those, do you anchor up and work from fast water to slow, slow to fast, both?
I can see wood eating blades up like popcorn but are blades a little more(relatively speaking) less prone to snagging on rocks? I’m not TOO worried about losing stuff to snags. It’s going to happen no matter what a guy does. I chalk it up as part of the learning process but if there is a way to lessen the losses then I’m all ears.
Thanks for any input.
April 23, 2014 at 3:44 pm #1405779If you think your blade vibrates by putting your snap in the middle hole…try the rear hole of the blade and feel the vibration then. My 20 plus years fishing blades I have only used the middle hole to vertical jig the blade and ALWAYS the rear hole for pitching them. Give it a try
April 23, 2014 at 4:05 pm #1405787There goes that wives tale out the window! Thanks Woody.
First off I can’t catch a break with a blade…
but have you guys tried the tweener blades? The ones that can be tweeked by bending them a little for more vibration?
