Gentleman, with the work schedule finally clearing up I am going to be heading down to Pool 4 tomorrow. From the sounds of it the spawn is mostly done. I am somewhat new to the river fishing thing and from what I have gathered, after the big girls spawn out they get in the current and head for Pepin? I that is the case, does a person start fishing more towards Pepin trying to intersect them on their way there? are there always some “local” fish that hang around the same area all year? Just some tips / tricks on what I should be looking for on Friday. Thanks

I don’t fish P4 anywhere as often as in the past…but its really no different than P7, P6,… other than you have a small scale version of river (excluding the lake)up there.
Not all walleyes spawn at the same time. So there will still be later & early spawners as well as many in-between. I would still hit very shallow spawning habitat in the 1 to 3 fow and then start working deeper. From there, continue down until you get into them. They don’t just rush down to the lake, they meander and feed. On Pool 7, I’ve caught some of the largest walleyes to date 1 to 3 weeks after everyone says they are spawned out and its over. But then again, those guys are usually fishing deeper holes while I’m pounding the shallows at nightperchheadPosts: 329April 17, 2014 at 10:49 am #1404818I don’t believe that the spawn has fully kicked in yet from what I saw of the fish last Saturday they still were almost full of eggs judging from all the females we saw brought into be weighed at the MTT tournament. If you are judging the spawn by lack of talk on pool 4 that is because there is another tournament this Saturday and the following weekend also.
You will know when the spawn hits because the weights in these tournaments will be real low not 30lbs on 4 fish.

The amount of pressure it gets they might only feed at night, or travel down getting sick of hit in the head with 1/4oz jigs. Remember a guy reporting on the largest shad bait ball he’s seen last week, and with the prolonged spring still keeping the lake cool I’d bet there will be plenty of biggies remaining in the river feasting.
April 17, 2014 at 11:20 am #1404828They always seem to stay in the river until the middle to the end of June…except for last year. It was good in August for the few that didn’t head down to the lake because they “should”.
RRR is going to love me.

April 17, 2014 at 1:56 pm #1404859You will see both post and pre spawn my guess many fish were dumping last weekend on the mtt. Many had hard belies. Some are always later. Cover water that is my answer.
April 17, 2014 at 5:04 pm #1404874Pick a jig combo you have confidence in and pitch pitch pitch. Or find current seams put on a 1/2 jig and work it vertically. You will catch fish
April 17, 2014 at 8:11 pm #1404898Ok….. as for spawning habitat…rocks or sand ? Or both? And how deep will they spawn in ? I also assume as fish get to the dam the don’t spawn there ?musst peel back and find a spot?

For the miss, my experience is small stone with very little wood and mild current. Clams would be a second. In years that the water never seems to warm well, wood, cattails, or grass. Depth- 6″ to 8′ is where I look.
