I just spent a wonderful week at Apple Canyon Lake with my wife and kids. I would rise early each morning and hit the lake. I fished for bluegills for a few hours, and then would take the kids and my wife tubing for a few hours. After an afternoon nap, I would head back to the boat for a night of bluegill and walleye fishing. Walleyes in this lake are an under-appreciated gem. Oh sure, a few are taken accidentally each year, but not many people target them. I not only spent the week targeting them, I was consistently hitting a bull’s-eye! The tactics I deployed were actually quite simple… Lighted slip bobbers, wire hook, and a leech. All on four pound test mono to boot. When the walleyes weren’t active, the monster gills were, most nights. Night after night, I would catch the biggest gills of the day, after dark. As for locations, I would fish windswept shorelines with the greatest success. Here’s the biggest ‘eye of the week, 26.75” and is still swimming tonight.
