River Virgins

Wrong kind of virgins you perverts! I need a little help, I’m going to be turkey hunting next week and plan on going fishing with my dad on the river in the afternoons. Problem is I’ve never fished the Miss before and am a little worried about hitting wing dams or other structure with my dad’s boat. We’ll be hunting around Alma so I’m not sure if we’ll be on Pool 4 or 5, suggestions?. Are there maps available which would help? Where are the boat launches? From the other posts I’ve read it sounds like the ringworm marketing machine makes you feel like a fool if you leave the dock without them, if this is so can I get them in Alma? This is a great site and thanks for any help in advance.

    SteveO,

It’s sounds like they’re worth about a Leine’s apiece, where do I find you to deliver the beer? How about launches and maps???

sounds like steveO is going to make ya a good deal on the ringworms i would hit him up on that offer. cause otherwise they are a little bit higher. there is a landing ramp right behind the cenex feed mill at the end of alma you’ll see it, if you are going during the week pool 4 would be a good choice cause boat traffic will be down. In alma there is one wing dam you need to worry about by the damn which is about 300 yards from it, it is at the end of the closest point to the damn, you can either go above it or below it if you go below watch the float boat or stay close to the point and you will be fine. In pool 5 you should go to everts cause he will give you some advice, that will probably be your best bet. The guy will tell you anything you want to know and give you some good advice, plus he has ring worms and superdos, it is only a 40 minute drive from alma, so it is a good trip to make especially now that they are starting to pull some piggies out of pool 5. on one of the banners for everts you can get driving directions also so take a look that is probably your best bet

    gatzeye,

sounds like the local filled you in on info. i know absolutely nothing about the Alma area fishing wise. trying it out with a buddy from Osseo. i’m fishing out of his rig and i don’t even know what it looks like. we’re not heading out until mid to late Sat. morning and hoping we don’t get blown off. what rig will you be in? if I see ya, i will give you some of the rubbery little devils. A Leinie’s a piece is a little steep. I’ll take one or two from you, but promise to order some from B-Fish-N and tell Hawger that the ol’ SteveO sent you!

    good luck

    SteveO,

I won’t be there until the middle of next week, I wish I could’ve met up with you. You’ll just have to go run up a tab somewhere and I’ll pick it up when I get there. Good luck this weekend!

    larsonlawyers,

I’m a bit confused, you said that I should go to Evert’s for advice when I’m fishing on Pool 5, isn’t he up by Red Wing and pool 4?

I grew up in Ettrick WI pop. 495. 5 bars if you include the one in Beach Corners. Ever wonder why Wisconsin is number 1 in brandy consumption?

    Gatseye,

Larsonlawyer confused you because he trys to steer people away from Alma. [By his own admision] don’t let him scare you off. Alma has fine fishing and great facilities. Check the report section for pool 5 latest report. The bait & tackle shop is in the cenex right across from the boat landing. It has a full supply of ringworms and Super-Doos plus killer jigs and any thing else you need for the river. We are also the registration station so I hope to see you with a big Tom. there is nothing wrong with pool 4 or Everts just trying to give you a clear picture. good luck and have fun

Sounds like your gonna run right into some great fishing. The ringworms do work, but don’t lose site of pool 5’s major player, the Walleye Killer jig. These are very deadly, and can be bought in mass quantities at Cenex, right by the boat landing.Stop in the Cenex and talk to Randy. He will give you the straight poop on the bite, and the bait. They also have full service bait and tackle,as well as snacks and fuel. Also, they carry some of the commonly failed parts for your boat incase something happens. They have saved me twice from having to run 100 miles round trip back home. It’s pretty easy to find the hot areas here to,just be a little nosey and look where the boats are.I like to hang outside and watch a bit to see what there doing, then mimic what looks to be working. Also, the crowd is much easier to deal with compared to pool 4.Good luck!

Seems that most people think so it just depends what kind of entertainment the bar has i guess

I have seen what happens to bait shop owners/operators that intentionaly give inaccurate info. They are almost always alone after a season or two.i have been buying bait and minnows from Piscator for several years and, even before he knew me by name,I have yet to feel like I was mis-guided by him.He simply reports what the majority report to him.I’m quite sure he does fish, and loves to fish.Ever know a person in his line of business that doesn’t?I’m sure Jarred and Lee give very good info as well, and i’d also bet that they have given Piscator info about the fishing.Come on now,we like to read honest, accurate info on these boards.Lets keep the good and drop the bad…

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I think we’ll probably stay on pool 5 as it’s closer and less crowded from what I hear. Not that I’m ready to get picky or anything, but is the trophy fishing just as good in pool 5 as pool 4, and is there such thing as a pool 5 map? Thanks again guys!

Well, more big fish are probably caught on pool 4 due to there fishery being better, but there are plenty of big fish caught on pool 5. Most that you hear about are caught up by the damn this time of year, otherwise on some of the wingdams by the damn. The fishing float is a good chance to get a big one, this time of year they almost get 1 big one evry day if not more than one. Mostly of my biggest fish have come from pool 4. MY two biggest are 28, and 26.5.
