Guys. I picked up a Shimano Sedona 1000 reel the other day. Though I’ll probably try it a lot for crappie/panfish, I was wondering if anyone has any experience using that reel for walleye.

Works great its just my hands are so big the bail touches the knuckles so that is why I go to a 2500 size now.
Great reel though.
March 10, 2014 at 12:31 pm #1395175Cool. Thanks, guys. I like the Shimano reels but wasn’t sure if the 1000 size was too small. I have big hands, too. Oh well…I’ll give it a shot and see how it works.
March 10, 2014 at 12:41 pm #1395180It would be a big difference if you were throwing cranks with it. The inches/revolution would be much less. That is very similar in size to a size 10 Quantum and I use them for pitching and jigging a lot.
March 10, 2014 at 1:14 pm #1395194I would agree…
I use almost exclusively shimano spinning reels and most commonly 1000, 2000/2500, or 3000 size, and model lines from the Sienna to the Sahara. See how it balances the rod you want to use it on.
On a side note, John, I think that there are some tweaks that can be made to shimano reels, I plan to upgrade some of mine to carbon drag washers, but was currious if you would have other pointers/ideas.
March 10, 2014 at 1:35 pm #1395199I will agree with previous posters. If you plan on rigging or cranking you might be a tad on the small side. It’s a great reel for pitching and jigging though. Give a try and see if it fit’s your needs. It’s a great reel for the price.

I’m the same as you, nearly all my spinning reals are shimano sahara or other. Drags SUCK in the winter (Cold) though. Mine will all be getting carbon drags this year.
March 10, 2014 at 3:22 pm #1395227I have the drag washers instock on hand right now.
It is a cheap upgrade and I usually can do it on the spot. Cleaning and changing out lubes take about 2 weeks.
I have all carbon fiber drags because I hate frozen drags.

Another thing is to swap out the grease to a SuperLube or other high quality grease in the gears. Carbon fiber drags are a must. I also “wash” the bearings out because there is so much dirt and old grease that sneak into those little gaps that can make a clean reel still feel dirty.

Are you saying I can send you my reels and save the hassle?
