Oh crap that’s a 100 yards that means no scour hole. Can anyone help out if there is any other spots to fish down there
BK when did this change.? In the past it always was March 1st to May 1st…rrr
Isn’t there also a warning horn that goes off? Or is that set at a different distance?
Oh, and what about the closed area sign at White Cross? Is that sign still there? It seems that one gets ignored pretty regularly.
I was wondering about that too. And glad I’m not the only one who refers to that area as “White Cross”. heh, heh.
I believe that one is not a DNR issued sign they are all up the Vermillion as well if we are thinking of the same signs. If I am correct it is the bird/wildlife club in town isn’t it?

Regarding the comments regarding the “White Cross” areas by the dams. For the fishermen who do not know, the buoys and day marks are regulatory marks that are part of the U.S. Aids to Navigation. See page 9 of U.S. Coast Guard’s U.S Aids to Navigation System brochure http://www.uscgboating.org/assets/1/workflow_staging/Publications/486.PDF
Recreational boaters on the Mississippi River are required to be knowledgeable of these requirements and to comply with them. See page 28 of “The Handbook of Wisconsin Boating Laws and Responsibilities” http://dnr.wi.gov/files/PDF/pubs/LE/LE0301.pdf Also see page 30 of MNDNR “Minnesota Boating Guide 2014 A summary of Laws and Rules” http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/boatwater/boatingguide.pdf
The “White Cross” markings downstream of local dams are exclusionary marks prohibiting boats from entering the restricted areas below the dam. These restricted areas are there because the history of many fatalities below the dams proves that those waters and under current areas are not safe boating areas. We have all seen the many “sportsmen” who feel it is “cool” to see who can cheat furthest into the restricted areas. These individuals are setting terrible examples for our children and families. Safety needs to come first before trying for an extra ten feet of fishing where they do not belong. I encourage all who observe those encroaching into the restricted areas to express your disappointment.
I also encourage those who are not familiar with topics such as the U.S. Aids to Navigation system, to contact the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the MN DNR, or the WI DNR to obtain boating safety information to share with your families so all can enjoy this wonderful river safely.
To be clear, the restricted areas marked by the Aids to Navigation are in effect year round and are closer to the dams than the seasonal 300 ft environmental zones established by the DNRs.
I think we’re talking about different “White Cross” areas. I’m referring to the large metal white cross sticking in the ground that’s on the MN side, sorta southwest of Everts. There’s a small sign along that bank, upstream from the cross, that has some language about not allowing fishing certain times of the year as I recall.

..You rrr right. The area in ?? has been known as the white cross for many years. Has absolutely Nothing to do with state, federal or coast guard Regs. or wing dams. It is just the name of a fishing spot on pool 4…rrr Ps Someone said its somewhere down around Wabasha.
There are no fish to be caught by the white cross. I wouldn’t ever waste any time fishing there.
Wow, 100 yards! I’ve fished while holding onto the roller below 15 (was with a corps employee during low flow and no current/tow).
