I thought about fishing the middle and lower parts of Pool 2 later this week. How’s the bite? Any current information, advice would be appreciated.

My advise is to bring a paintball gun with you, and don’t be afraid to use it…
July 13, 2004 at 5:03 pm #312407Do I shoot the sheepies in an off green to make them look like walleyes, or and I think to better use the speedboats up by the confluence.
July 13, 2004 at 5:33 pm #312416I wouldn’t aim a paintball gun at anybody on the shore. You may get lead in return.
July 13, 2004 at 7:23 pm #312460Troll shorelines until you get a fish then assault that area over and over again. Start at the confluence and troll up from there. You should find them.
July 13, 2004 at 7:53 pm #312477The wingdams on the middle and lower part should be holding fish. I was happy with the action we found on them last thursday.
There where also eyes on the rip rap but the size waas a little off. 18″ was the biggest. Orange craw was a good color for us that night.
The eyes seem to be pretty active every where right now. What days are you going to be out. We are heading out during the day on thursday.
July 14, 2004 at 2:17 pm #312607I am planning of fishing the lower end of the river tomorrow afternoon, evening. My boat is a 17ft Alumacraft with a 4 stroke Yamaha. I usual wear a red ball cap. Good fishing, maybe we will run into each other tomorrow.
Thanks

I was out on lower pool 2 last night. Water is very muddy and running fast from last weekends rain. It’s actually as bad as I have seen it this year. Water clarity was less than 2 inches.
You may want to consider the upper end anywhere above the confluence untill the lower pool clears up.
July 15, 2004 at 2:37 pm #312843Thanks for the timely advice. Looks like its the Confluence for me. Look for a post tomorrow. Thanks again.
July 15, 2004 at 8:07 pm #312944It can on the upper end. There just isn’t much water up there, so it can be tight quarters at times. Hit it early in the morning for no traffic.
July 16, 2004 at 4:33 pm #313070The lower part of 2 was dead for me also yesterday. Where did all the junk come from. I would think as soon as it clears up the wingdam bite should be going strong again.
The trolling bite on the upper part is still going good. Mid day seems to find the most active fish on my last couple of trips. This should change as the water clears up again. Found fish all the way down to the 35e bridge yesterday with a 22″ being the biggest. Some of the lips on these eyes are starting to look a little rough. Maybe a third of the fish I caught looked to had been caught before. Wonder if maybe I had the samefish following the boat around for awhile.
July 17, 2004 at 3:50 pm #313171Thanks for the advice. Thursday evening fished from the confluence and up. I was surprized at how dirty the Minnesota river was. Caught 5 fish total, 4 walleyes and one smallmouth with the biggest walleye coming in at 20 inches. Though the fishing was not as good as past trips, it was still fun the get out. I took a friend of mine who is a long time St. Paul resident, he couldn’t believe what a cool fishery the river is and kept mentioning that he couldhnt believe how good the fishing was.
July 18, 2004 at 1:21 am #313188I fished pool 2 the last two weekends from 6am to 1pm, I fished wing dams in the mid pool and caught several walleyes each trip, not the big pigs I got last year but all between two and three lbs. The fish were caught on three way rigs with a crawler and bead as well as casting crank baits. If you strictly casted cranks I think you may miss out on catchable fish. I typically pull three ways from the tip 2/3 of the way in and cast cranks to shore.I have also picked up some smallmouth on the shallow rocks and had quiet a good time with a big school of 2 lb. white bass that smacked my small shad colored crankbait over and over for an hour. I nailed a ten lb. sheephead and a five lb. cat on the crank as well. I had the same luck on walleyes, it seemed like they really turned on at noon when the sun came out last saturday.Unfortunitly with a 9 week old black lab at home my fishing has been of the half day nature. I got herout on the boat last sunday sowe are planning to take her to red wing this weekend. Good luck on pool two.
July 18, 2004 at 5:24 am #313200Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I am new to wingdam fishing and up to now have fished these with cranks. My next trip out, will have to try 3 ways.
