RED WING, Minn. (KTTC) — Dozens of anglers took advantage of the warm weather on Tuesday and went boating on the Mississippi River for open water fishing.

“Up here by the dam there’s what’s called the scouring hole and it gets to about 80 foot deep,” said Doug Robinson of Maple Grove.

Avid anglers-like Doug Robinson-started warming up for another season on the water. The warm temperatures have even lured in fishermen from Iowa and Wisconsin.

There are no boundaries when it comes to trolling for the catch of the day: walleye and sauger.

“Any window of opportunity that I’m given, I’m going to take advantage of it this time of year for sure,” said Robinson.

According to the DNR’s website, the largest recorded fish caught in the Mississippi near Red Wing was in June of 2007. It was a Shovelnose Sturgeon.

Edit: The largest RECORD fish that came from Pool 4 was a Shovelnose Sturgeon. It was caught in June of 2007. There’s a photo of it in the Everts Resort Bait Shop

That was pretty cool, looks like you guys don’t have much flow up there.

Quite the goof-up saying the largest fish recorded caught there was the shovelnose, state record isn’t even 6lbs is it? But, they screw up worse than that down here. Our news crew doesn’t even know the difference between a duck and a gull. The other day the lady said she was amazed at all of the white ducks flying around with the eagles.
